RACING & TROTTING

On and Off the Track A BUDGET OF NEWS AND VIEWS FIXTURES Racing: May 26—South Canterbury J.C. June 2,4, s—Dunedin J.C. June 2,4, 6—Auckland R.C. June 2, 4—Otaki Maori R.C. Trotting: June 2, 4—Canterbury Park T.C. June 2, 4—Hawke’s Bay T.C. June 9—Ashburton T.C. June 20, 23—Auckland T.C. Acceptances for the South canterbury May meeting will be received until 9 o’clock to-night. L. J. Ellis will ride Silver Streak at Washdyke on Saturday. Gold Knight will have the services of D. O’Connor. Next season the Feilding Stakes, a weight-for-age race, is to be replaced by a two-year-old handicap worth £l5O. Cleaner and Red Dance are unlikely acceptors for the South Canterbury meeting. R. Reed intends to leave for Sydney again early in June, probably after the Otaki meeting. The Beaconsfield Trot at Washdyke will be something in the nature of a free-for-all. The thirty-five entrants are all on the limit. Imperial Spear had the services of A. E. Ellis in the Highweight at Ashburton, but -after leading for half a mile he had had enough when the straight was reached. Conjuror 11. who is on the minimum in the Levels Hurdles, three years ago won the Century Hurdles at Wanganui with 10.3, and two years ago was second in the same race with 10.5. Luna Lux has not been heard of lately, but he is going well at Hastings, and apparently is being got ready for the Wellington and Grand National fixtures. There were possibilities of a sensational dividend in the Selma Trot at Ashburton. Nelson Child was entrusted with £l, Harvest Gale with 30/-, and Secret Service with £2/10/-. The Dunedin Jockey Club will continue using the win and place system of betting for the winter meeting, though it does not favour the present method of distributing the place pool. Mr A. S. Elworthy nas two jumpers in work at Washdyke. Royal Buck (Royal Stag-Flourish) is trained from the Kennels, while Velvet (Royal StagSporting Lady) is in F. Trilford’s stable.

D. O’Connor is putting up a great record in high-weights this season. He is a bit above the average of riders eligible for this class of race, and it is no reflection on the other horsemen concerned to say that he might have won on any of the three placegetters.

Ever since Adsum came home with a rush to secure second place at the Timaru meeting in January, the Washdyke mare has been prominent in the betting in all her races, but failure to begin well has made her expensive. At Ashburton she paced up to her private form and won handsomely.

Mr R. E. Hatch, of Awapuni, who does a good deal of starting on the West Coast, manipulated the barrier at Ashburton on Saturday. There were two broken despatches in an otherwise good day’s work. One, however, was in the novice event, and the horses which were left were green.

Water Power is apparently to be kept at sprinting at the Dunedin meeting. On the first two days her only engagements are in the six furlong races, and her longest test on the third day may be over a mile. It is understood that P. T. Hogan’s lease will expire at the end of July.

Ironside (Wrack-Gatwick) was responsible for a smart Sapling Stakes trial in the Selma Trot at Ashburton. Losing a good deal of ground in the opening stage, the Durbar Lodge representative was’not sighted until the straight was reached, and he finished strongly in second place in 3.26 2-5, good time on a decidedly dead track.

With most of the better class middledistance performers in winter retirement, there is a temporary shortage of horses for open races in this section. This was obvious at Ashburton and Washdyke, and it is no different at Dunedin. There are thirteen nominations for the Provincial Handicap, but nine of them are entered in other races also.

There may be a big muster of two-year-old pacers at the South Canterbury meeting next Saturday. At least a dozen horses of this age have been nominated, including Gamble, Moana Tama, Levity, Grace McElwyn, Guardsman, Agility, Radiant Gold, Wandle Chimes, Ironside, Graham Direct and Drag Harlan. To date, Ironside, Moana Tama, Levity and Gamble have the best public form.

Some English racing men do not regard the Derby as the certainty for Colombo that the betting lists suggests. Their theory is that he is too brilliant to stay, and that he may crash just as Orwell, another paper certainty, did a couple of years ago. Colombo’s sire, Manna, is a Derby winner, and inherited his stamina from Phalaris. a sire of sires of stayers, so that the unbeaten colt has more than speed behind him.

Harold Logan’s gross earnings in the series of match races since Easter Saturday are over £I2OO. In the seven contests, two at Addington, two at Epsom, and one each at Forbury, Oamaru and Wellington, he has a record of five wins, a second and a third. In five attempts Walla Walla has scored one win and one second (two starters), and been three times unplaced. Red Shadow has failed to win in his six outings, but has never missed a place — four seconds and two thirds. Impromptu’s two efforts have produced a win and a second, a good average.

The leg ailment which caused Gaine Carrington’s withdrawal from autumn engagements after winning the Williamstown Stakes in February was viewed so seriously as to create doubt whether he would ever race again. Recent advice from Melbourne states that the horse is walking soundly and that his trainer C. T. Godby, is of opinion that he will be able to go through another racing preparation in the spring. It was unfortunate that Gaine Carrington should have gone amiss when at the top of his form, for he proved himself one of the best of his age when he carried 8.13 to victory in the Caulfield Cup, running the mile and a-half in 2.281. an Australian and New Zealand record.
