Front doors in the newer houses in New Zealand, as well as in the Old World, are nowadays often interesting and striking. The latest idea is to have a mirror on the wall beside the gaily-painted door, so that arriving guests may tidy themselves while they wait for an answer to their ring. Some hostesses are also having their names painted across the top of the door to save mistakes in finding the house. The "speculatorium,” or small grille, through which visitors may be inspected before admittance, is a revival from monasteries of the Middle Ages. In some of the modern houses this grille is replaced by a sheet of clear glass.

MIDDLESEX PASTRY

Try this appetising cold weather dish. 6oz. Fether-Flake, i breakfast cup cold minced meat, -s breakfast cup cooked potato, 1 breakfast cup mixed cooked vegetables. About 2 tablespoons white sauce or gravy. Seasoning. Roll out half the Fether-Flake and line a plate or tin. Spread filling over (cold), cover with another round of Fether-Flake.
