ROYAL PATRONAGE

The visit of a member of the Royal House to the Dominion at the end of the year raises the question of the possibility of the granting of the title of Royal to at least one of the New Zealand golf clubs. So far this honour, granted originally to the Royal and Ancient Club by King William IV., has been conferred on 63 clubs, almost all in different parts of the Empire. Of these 37 are in the British Isles, 23 in the Empire, while three are in Belgium. In Australia one club in each State is entitled to use the prefix “Royal,” one being in each State capital. In most cases the title is granted along with the royal patronage of the club in question. Further details are to hand regarding the nature of the golf competitions that will be leading features during the Melbourne Centenary celebrations. Apart from the £30Q,0 cash prizes and the many handsome trophies that will be given in connection with the Centenary championships at the Metropolitan Club, there is also announced a tournament with prizes of £SOO and a gold cup valued at £l5O, at the Peninsula Club. The Kingston Heath Club has also applied for permission to hold a £250 open championship.
