FOOTBALL

SATURDAY’S MATCHES LARGE ATTENDANCE AND BRIGHT PLAY The largest attendance at Fraser Park this year was on Saturday treated to bright football, especially on No. 1 ground, where Old Boys gave a fine second-half exhibition to beat Star, last season's premiers, by 18 points to 12. The game was played at a fast rate, and while several penalties had a tendency to make the first session rather uninteresting, the referee’s strictness, especially regarding the offside rule, was reflected in the speed and brightness of the second half. On No. 2 ground, Zingari surprised by beating Temuka, last season’s runnersup, by 14 points to 11, and played good solid football. Pleasant Point journeyed to Geraldine and narrowly beat the home side, while at Winchester, Waihi beat Celtic 11—6. OLD BOYS 18, STAR 12. Old Boys kicked off with Star facing a strong sun. As a result of over eagerness Old Boys were penalised three times during the first few minutes. On the third occasion Meikle had a shot from wide out in the 25, his kick missing. Star made another attempt to open the score from about 15 yards inside halfway, Seaton failing. The first determined back rush of the match was seen when Marshall set the Old Boys’ rearguard in motion from halfway. Satterthwaite made downfield with Matthews on the outside of him. He passed infield to Marshall, however, but the transfer was forward. Play swung from one end of the field to the other at a fast rate. A good kick by Seaton saw Hall carry the ball over the line, a five yards’ scrum being ordered. Old Boys came round too quickly, and Star were given a good opportunity to open the score, Meikle failing narrowly. A scrum was ordered 15 vards inside half-way, and for failing to put the ball in cleanly Star were penalised. A magnificent kick saw Gaffaney earn three points. Old Boys 3, Star 0. Matters were evened a minute later when Old Boys infringed in a line-out in their 25 and ICing made no mistake with the kick. Star 3, Old Boys 3. Free kicks were indeed plentiful and Old Boys’ turn came when a Star back offended against the off-side rule in an attempt to stop a strong rush in the 25. Marshall made the most of an easy opportunity. Old Boys 6, Star 3. Old Boys infringed in a scrum on their 25 line, but this time King's kick at goal lacked direction. Star, chiefly through the agency of Seaton's kicking, made two determined rushes to Old Boys’ line, a force and a free kick respectively from five yards’ scrums driving them back. The score reached an interesting stage when Old Boys were penalised for offside at the 25,' and Meikle took, advantage of a direct line to goal. Star 6, Old Boys 6. The position was reversed a minute later when, in similar circumstances Marshall placed Old Boys in front. The half time score was— Old Boys 9, Star 6. Old Boys cleverly intercepted a Star back movement and attacked strongly, Satterthwaite taking play to Star's corner. Here Gaffaney secured from Marshall and was held up inches from the line. Another scrum was ordered, Star being penalised. Gaffaney missed narrowly with the kick from wide-out. Play took a brighter turn when both sets of backs began to throw the ball about freely. The defence of both sides, however, was sol'd. Gaffaney had an unsuccessful shot from 15 yards inside half-way, the ball missing narrowly. With Star attacking between the 25 and half-way a melee resulted. Gaffaney picked up and sent Cameron and Hall away. The winger crossed near the corner with Meikle hanging on to him. Gaffaney’s kick went wide. Old Boys were nearly over again when a movement started by Gaffaney from half-way resulted in Marshall being grassed inches from the line. Play was returned to neutral territory. Morrison broke through brilliantly and a try looked certain until he was hauled down a foot from the scoring area by Gaffaney. A scramble followed, Old Boys being penalised for Morrison to goal from wide out. Old Boys 12, Star 9. Old Boys were now definitely superior, their backs getting plenty of the ball to handle faultlessly. Hall was nearly over in the corner on two occasions, Grayburn and Morrison driving the attackers back. Old Boys’ position was assured when Marshall goaled from a penalty at the 25 line. Old Boys 15, Star 9. Old Boys continued to press and from a scrum on the 25 Marshall worked the blind side effectively to send Gaffaney over for a try. Strang’s kick was wide. Old Boys 18, Star 9. Star made a great final effort and hemmed Old Boys on their line, where from a scrum Adkins forced his way over. Morrison’s kick missed, after which time was called with the scores: — Old Boys 18, Star 12. Mr W. Direen was referee. ZINGARI 14, TEMUKA 11. Zingari held a territorial advantage early in the first spell, using their weight in the scrum to win possession. Temuka entered their opponents' g-'ound for the first time as a result of a good conceited back rush, Leonard in-passing to Solomon and Goodson, the movement taking play to Zingari’s 25 line. Carnellie and King broke through, however, and cleared to neutral territory. Keeping a steady pressure on Temuka’s line, Zingari compelled the country side to force down twice in a few minutes, and a moment later, when the Yellow forwards sent the ball back from a line-out at the 25 line, Samways cut in brilliantly. His pass to Hurst went astray and the ball went into touch, Tpmuka, clearing fro.-n the line-out. The Magpies penetrated to Zingari 25, where a dropped pass allowed Hurst and Carnellie to come through with the ball at their toes. Carnellie took play to Temuka’s quarter, where the custodian, Parrant, cleared. Things looked bad for Zingari when King failed to bring off a speculator, and the country forwards surged on the line. Zingari used their weight to advantage, however, and a long kick by King sent the attackers back to their 25. At this stage, A. Horgan received a broken jaw and slight concussion, which compelled him to retire. Scott, Duke and McCully lead a dribbling rush into Zingari’s 25, where Goodson secured and transferred to Blyth, who beat three men and scored near the posts. Duke converted. A few minutes later, King opened Zingari’s score with a great penalty kick from 40 yards out. Just bc'ore half-time, Zingari were penalised in front of their own posts, and Duke goaled easily, making the scores. Temuka 8, Zingari 3. Gutteridge renlaced Horgan in the second spell. Zingari again assumed the offensive, and from solid rucking in Temuka's 25, the ball came back to King who potted, but the leather went outside the posts. Zingari kept up the attack, r ->d A. Hurst made a good

J run to the corner, where he was forced into touch. The Yellows’ efforts were | rewarded a minute later, when Bishop snapped up in the 25 and passed to I Samways, to W. Hurst, who cut in and, staving off a tackle, crossed in a handy position. King kicked a good goal. Shortly after, Temuka were penalised about 30 yards out and near the touchline, and King raised the flags with a stupendous kick to put Zingari in the lead. Leonard turned the tables with a strong run which took play to Zingari’s line, but the Yellows escaped by | forcing down. Excitement ran high | when, a few minutes later, Zingari ! were penalised and Duke kicked a good j goal from well out to equalise the I scores. The closing stages of the t game saw both teams struggling for I supremacy and. with only a few minI utes to play, King again goaled from I a penalty giving Zingari the lead. Temuka battled hard to pull the game ' out of the fire, but they could do no I more than hold their own and the I match ended with the scores:— Zingari 14, Temuka 11. j Mr S. Black was referee. WAIHI 11, CELTIC 6. Celtic won the toss and played with the sun behind -them. From the kick-off Waihi set up an attack, but good rucking by Ryan, Mechen and Collings relieved the situation. From a scrum. Bracken opened up and sent the ball to Poliiil to Jamieson to Quirke, who was upended by Sinclair. The Celtic forwards headed a movement down the field. When near the Waihi 25, Delury put the ball over the bar from a penalty, but owing to a man being in front, the goal was disallowed. Whiting picked up near midway and ran through, but was nicely taken by Delury when near the goal-line. Goddard cleared with a timely liner near the half-way flag. From a scrum Bracken sent out to Pohill to Jamieson to Quirke to Wood, who sent a pass infield to Jamieson, who scored a try at the corner. G. South converted with a good kick. Waihi 5, Celtic 0. A long kick by Delury found touch near Waihi's corner flag. From a forward scramble Smith secured and went over for a try. Delury missed the kick. Waihi 5, Celtic 3. From a passing rush play went to Celtic's 25, where Celtic were penalised, and G. South goaled. Waihi 8, Celtic 3. From the kick out, Celtic forwards opened up a movement which went to the Waihi 26 flag where Waih. were penalised, Delury kicked out at the corner flag. At half-time the score was:— Waihi 8, Celtic 3. 1 After several scrums in the centre of the field, Jamieson broke away, but McCarten cleared. Whiting was penalised and Delury kicked a good goal. Waihi 8, Celtic 6. Solid forward play followed with Celtic hooking the ball from the scrums, but the fast breaking Waihi forwards were giving the Celtic backs a harassing time. From halfway, Bracken sent Pohill, Jamieson, Quirke and Wood away, the lastnamed scoring well out. South's kick failed. Waihi 11, Celtic 6. From a line-out at the centre, McCarten sent out to Roper, Manning arfa Goddard, who was taken by Hewson, allowing Higinbottom to clear. McCarten again opened up by sending Roper, Goddard and Sinclair away. Good solid tackling by Quirke and Wood averted a score. Pohill make a good run before sending out to Jamieson to Quirke, who dropped his pass. A movement by W. South, Pemberton and Pierce was annulled by offside play. Sinclair made a solo run down the line and short punted over Higinbottom, Pohill and Jamieson coming around to save. When time was called play was in midfield and the score:— Waihi 11, Celtic 8. Mr L. W. Parrant was referee. PLEASANT POINT 3, GERALDINE 0. Geraldine kicked off against the sun. The Red and Blacks took up the attack but a mark by Cartwright relieved. Point gained Geraldine territory, where D. Callanan made a nice opening, but the attack was smothered. Point forwards again broke through from a scrum, a free kick giving Geraldine relief. The Point backs secured from a scrum, and a likely passing rush was frustrated by S. Callanan. who intercepted. Point again attacked, but the Geraldine forwards broke through. Gliddon snapped up and gained considerable ground. The Point backs again got going, but Geraldine frustrated the attempt. Dewar picked up smartly from a scrum, but his pass was forward. Geraldine then attacked but a free kick relieved Point. The Geraldine forwards attempted to break away but Point set up a fast passing rush across the field, S. Callanan bringing down the last man. Angland broke away and was unfortunate in not scoring. Even play continued till halftime was called in Geraldine’s 25, neither side having scored. A fast attack by Point was nullified by a knock-on, and Geraldine broke through to midfield. A gruelling struggle in Geraldine’s corner saw Guy force his way over but Simpson's attempt to convert failed. Geraldine kept up the pressure. Eventually the Point forwards broke away, and carried play to Geraldine’s twenty-five. Stringer and A. Morris instituted a "Hribbling rush the length of the field, but Point managed to force in time. Geraldine kept up the pressure and | were again within an ace of scoring. Brosnahan broke through and Geraldine had some anxious moments. S. Callanan broke away and attempted to pass to Stringer, but Vucetich intercepted. Another Geraldine attack was foiled by Simpson. Hard work saw Point force play to the Geraldine twenty-five, but the defence held. Time was called with play in midfield, and the score Pleasant Point 3, Geraldine 0. Mr A. B. Rowlands was referee.
