In the preliminary rounds of the Davis Cup, France eliminated Australia. Results were as follow: Singles—Boussus (France) beat Matejka (Austria), 6-1, 6-1, 6-4; Merlin (France) beat Metaxa (Austria), 4-6, 8-6, 6-2, 6-2. Doubles Borotra and Brugnon (.France) beat Artens and Metaxa (Austria), 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. Borotra had not arrived at 3.30 wh«n the doubles were due to start and it was decided to wait three minutes. Borotra arrived at 3.35, but Artens, the Austrian captain, refused to play and claimed the match, upon which the match was awarded to Austria. Artens ten minutes later changed his mind and the match began. India Eliminated. At Lucerne, Switzerland eliminated India. Results were as follow: Singles—Ellmer (Switzerland) beat Sleem (India), 1-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-0; Fisher (Switzerland) beat Bhandari (India), 6-1, 6-2, 7-5. Doubles.—Fish and Steiner (Switzerland) beat Bhandari and Captain Browne (India), 6-3, 6-0, 6-1. PLAY IN SPANISH TOURNEY. BROTHER AND SISTER SUCCEED. Maier beat his Davis Cup team-mate, Sindreu. in the singles final, and won the doubles with Sindreu, and won the mixed doubles with his sister, who defeated Senorita Pons in the women's singles, and with Senorita Chavarri, won the doubles, beating Senorita Pons and Senorita Morales.
