A meeting of the committee of the Waimate District Hunt Club was held on Saturday night. Present: Capt. N. A. Rattray (president), Messrs R. Harper, J. Waldie, H. J. C. Harper, T. V. Cooney, F. Brown, D. Macdonald and E. B. Fraser. The District Committee, and » the New Zealand Trotting Association wrote approving the programme for the Club’s steeplechase meeting on July 26. The president said that the main object of the meeting was to decide definitely whether a race meetingshould be held this year or not. The last meeting of the committee had not been sufficiently representative of the members to decide the issue, and he would welcome an expression of opinion in the matter. Last year they had the assistance of guarantors to the extent of about £6O. Last year also they had the heartening fact before them that the local racing club was considerably up in its totalisator returns, whereas this year the returns were down to about the figures of two years previously. Further there was now an extra arbitrary decrease in rebate of one half per cent on totalisator turnover which would mean that whereas last year a very small loss only was incurred when the club had a turnover on the totalisator of £2,494, this year it would require a turnover of £3,500 to obtain a similar financial result. He would place the matter entirely in the hands of the members to decided. Mr H. J. C.*Harper said that his opinion had not varied since last year. The club must first and foiemost provide the sport of hunting lor members, and in addition it had the guarantors to consider. In the circumstances he did not consider that they would be warranted in undertaking (he financial risk which a race meeting involved. Mr E. B. Fraser said that he did not wish to place the club's guarantors in jeopardy, but there was a bigbody of non-hunting members who had to be considered. He would move that they should not carry on with the race meeting unless guarantors for £75 against loss on the day were forthcoming, and as time was getting short he would add to the motion that the guarantees be obtained by May 26. Mr R. Harper seconded the motion, which was carried. A discussion was then taken in committee regarding guarantees, at the conclusion of which it w«* ; announced that members present had guaranteed a total of £29, and that the executive officers, with Messrs Macdonald and Medlicott should meet one week from date to review what amount of guarantee had been obtained, and to decide as to whether the race meeting should be proceeded with or not. Point-to-Point. Discussing details of the programme for the annual point-to-point meeting on June 28, it was decided to fall in with the condition of the Soutn Canterbury fixture, by imposing a 71b penalty on competitors in the heavy-

weight and light-weight events trained by licensed trainers, all maiden horses to receive an allowance of 71b. It was decided to delete the six furlongs flat event, and substitute two gymkhana events consisting of a thread-the-needle race over one jump and a bending competition on the flar. Mr H. J. C. Harper’s offer of £3/3 '- towards trophies for these events was accepted with thanks. Mr Medlicott reported having received an offer of . a trophy value £3/3/- for the heavyweight event from Mr F. G. Paape, and the speaker also offered to collect the trophy for the lightweight hunters. The president offered to provide the trophy for the field hunter trial. Tlie donors were accorded a vote of thanks. The following officials were appointed for the fixture:—Judges, Messrs E. C. d’Auvergne and E. B. I raser; starters, Messrs N. A. Rattray and H. J. C.
