MEETING OF HOCKEY CLUB VISIT FROM AUSTRALIANS LIKELY At a meeting of the members of the Geraldine Men’s Hockey Club the president (Mr H. J. Bowkett) occupied the chair. In view of the probability of the Australian touring hockey team playing a match against the Geraldine SubAssociation’s team at Geraldine, the president emphasised the necessity of the members training with a view to improving their standard of play. The annual match with the South Canterbury Association on the King’s Birthday was discussed, and it was decided to ask the Geraldine SubAssociation to play the first match of the local competition at Geraldine, with a view to the Sub-Association’s selector (Mr A. Mackay) choosing the team for the match at Timaru. A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs G. Cain (Orari) for a donation. The application of Captain R. Burdon for permission to use the grounds for a friendly game was granted. It was decided to enter three teams in the competitions. COMBINED DANCE. The combined annual dance held in the Town Hall on Thursday night under the auspices of the Geraldine Basketball and Football Clubs proved very successful. Mr H. Brenton acted as M.C. The committee comprised Misses C. Turner, J. Vincent, M. McShane, D. Undrill and M. Lysaght, and Messrs A. H. Stringer, C. C. Knight, L. Lorimer and R. L. Hayes. An extra was played by Mr W. Horgan (Temuka). The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr W. Patrick and Miss Jessie Cameron, and a lucky spot fox trot by Mr M. R. C. Miller and Miss M. S. Kennedy. Opportunity was taken during the supper interval by the basketball players to make a presentation to Miss M. A. Lysaght on the occasion of her twenty-first birthday. In making the presentation of a pair of crystal vases, .the Club captain (Miss C. Turner) referred to the keen interest Miss Lysaght had taken in the welfare of the Club, and stated that the players thought the occasion was a splendid opportunity to show that they appreciated her services. DISTRICT NURSE APPEAL. An appeal in the interests of the Geraldine District Nurse Fund will be held in St. Mary’s Parish Hall, commencing at 10.30 a.m. next Wednesday, when stalls of all kinds will attract purchasers. Light luncheon and afternoon tea will also be available. “HARMONY ROW.” George Wallace, Australia’s leading comedian, will appear in a lively farce entitled “Harmony Row” at the Municipal Theatre to-night and on Monday. An unusually strong supporting programme will comprise the J. C. Williamson Grand Opera Orchestra in the overture from “Carmen.” Violin selections by Peter Bornstein and songs by Beryl Walker, a well-known soprano. Variety gazettes will also be screened, and the scenic will show the beautiful coral beds on the Great Barrier Reef. Services throughout the parish of Geraldine for to-morrow, Whitsunday, are advertised on the front page. The Rev. C. Harper, vicar of Ford, Northumberland, will preach at Woodbury at 11 a.m., and at Peel Forest at 7.30 p.m. The end of season dance of the Orari Tennis Club will be held in the Coronation Hall next Thursday, when trophies won during the year will be presented. The Men’s Hockey Club has booked Thursday, June 7, for its opening of season dance in the Town Hall. The Pleasant Valley Ladies’ Miniature Rifle Club will hold a Japanese ball next Tuesday. A prize will be given for the best Japanese costume. Mr E. Cholerton, Optical Specialist, proprietor of John R. Procter, Ltd., the Premier Opticians, Christchurch, will be visiting Geraldine personally, on Wednesday, 23rd May, and may be consulted at the Crown Hotel on all optical defects.
