JUBILEE BANQUET METHODIST LADIES' GUILD To celebrate the jubilee ol the t Methodist Ladies' Guild there was a large gathering present at the banquet held in the Methodist Hail. Denmark Street. The Rev. L. A. Brook presided. A welcome was extended to all by Mrs Brook. In proposing the toast of Mrs E. Longson the sepior member and who although more than 80 still takes an active interest in the Guild, Mrs J. Duncan said Mrs Longson had been one of the first members to join more than 50 years ago. Other toasts honoured were “The First Guild,” “The Present Guild,” “Past Presidents,” “Absent Members,” and “The Church.” Greetings from absent members were read by Mrs J. Buck. Mrs Duncan presented Mrs Longson with a bouquet and Mrs Duncan received a crystal bowl from Miss Brown and a bouquet from Mrs Cross. WOMEN’S INSTITUTES. Mrs Sewell presided over a large attendance of members and visitors at the monthly meeting of the Waitohi Women’s Institute. A motion of sympathy with Mrs Parrish in her recent bereavement was carried. A welcome was extended to Mrs Johnstone, a new member. Members were asked to prepare exhibits for the exhibition at Timaru during June. Mrs Dougherty was thanked for placing the wreath on the cenotaph cn Anzac Day. Demonstrations were given by Mrs Cartwright, of Pleasant Point, on re-covering an umbrella and patching a pair of boy’s shorts, and Miss Halstead, also of Pleasant Point, of preserving autumn leaves. Both were accorded a vote of thanks. Competition winners were:—A bowl of crysanthemums, Mrs Parrish 1, Mrs J. Lyon 2, Mrs Sewell and Miss M. Moore 3. Tomato sauce. Mrs Douglas 1, Mrs J. Lyon 2. Mesdames Douglas and Donald and Misses F. McKinnon and V. Nolan were the hostesses for the afternoon. The monthly meeting of the Rangitira Valley -Women’s Institute was held at “Woodlands,” the home of the president, Mrs Talbot, who presided over a fair attendance. Reference was made to the arts and crafts exhibition to be held at Timaru in June. Mesdames Talbot, Chester, Coventry, Davey, McCullough and Miss N. Stewart took part in a play reading, following which an interesting leaf guessing competition was held, and was won by Miss N. Stewart. Afternoon tea was dispensed by Mesdames Kennedy and Talbot. A discussion and exchange of ideas took place on various subjects. MINIATURE RIFLES. At the weekly shoot of the Menls Miniature Rifle Club the scores off the rifle were:—V. Nicholas 78, S. Summerfleld and W. Hogan tied. A deciding shoot will take place next week. OBITUARY. Mr Thomas Frisby, whose death occurred at Papanui on Tuesday, was very well-known and highly respected in the Temuka district. He was born at Ashburton in 1889 and received nis education at the Milford School, later coming to reside at Temuka where he owned a taxi business. About 10 years ago he left to take up a. business at Papanui and resided there until his death. Mr Frisby was a member of the Masonic and 1.0.0. F. Lodges. The funeral took place at the Temuka Cemetery on Thursday, when the pall-bearers were Messrs J, and W. Frisby, W. J. Reid. E. B. Cooper, E Hicknott and A. H. Cartwright. The service was attended by a large number of mourners and was conducted oy the Rev. A. C. K. Harper. Mr Frisby leaves a widow. FOOTBALL. The selectors have made several changes in the Temuka senior team to play to-day. The team is now W. McCully, A. Higginbottom, D. Reid, W. Scott, J. Stewart, A. Stewart, H. Palmer, W. Duke, L. Goodson, K. Blyth, A. Solomon, P. Leonard, D. Hopkinson, E. Ryan, C. Parrant' Emergencies, H. Gilbert, A. Lane, A. Horgan, B. Ferguson. PERSONAL. Mr Peter Campbell, King Street, who has been seriously ill with pneumonia in the Ashburton Hospital is making excellent progress. Mr T. H. Langford, Winchester, who for the last week has been confined to his home through slight indisposition is making satisfactory progress and hopes to be about again shortly.

Mr and Mrs Belcher, North Canterbury, are the guests of Mrs Henderson, Gammick Street. Miss Sinclair, Dunedin, is the guest of Mrs McCartie, Cass Street. Miss Dorothy Turnbull who was the guest of Mrs J. R. Turnbull, Godley Street, has returned to Walmate accompanied by Mrs Turnbull and Master Donald Turnbull. Miss Buckland, Akaroa, returned north yesterday after spending a holiday with her sister, Mrs L. H. Orbell, Winchester. GENERAL NEWS. Fifteen points of rain fell at Temuka on Thursday and three degrees of frost were registered yesterday. The day was cold while a few snowflakes, an unusual sight at Temuka, fell during the afternoon. “TELL ME TO-NIGHT.” "Tell Me To-night,” opening at Temulca to-day, is the latest GaumontBritish picture produced with British artists supporting Jan Kiepura, the eminent Polish tenor, who is under contract to the Vienna Opera, Really brilliant performances are given by Sonnie Hale, Edmund Gwenn, Athene Seyler, Betty Chester, and Magda Schneider. Most of the exteriors were taken at Lugano, and these scenes are magnificiently photographed. These beautiful open-air scenes play a big part in the picture, and Kiepura’s voice, singing in the open, creates a deep impression. Sonnie Hale, who plays one of the principal roles, is undoubtedly a British find as he photographs well and acts with a spontaneity that Is refreshing. There is an excellent array of supports, including a Mickey Mouse cartoon. The St. Joseph’s Old Girls’ Basketball Club will hold its annual dance on Monday, June 4. The annual meeting of the Temuka R.S.A. will be held in the Druids’ Hall on Thursday, at 8 p.m. The Waitohi Women’s Institute will hold its fourth annual birthday party on Tuesday, June 12. The Methodist Maori Male Choir Will appear at Temuka on Monday next, Fairlle Tuesday, Pleasant Point Wednesday, Cave, Thursday and Albury, Friday. The Temuka Caledonian Society will hold a social and dance in the Parish Hall on Wednesday.
