RACING & TROTTING

On and Off the Track A BUDGET OF NEWS AND VIEWS FIXTURES Racing: May 19—Rangitikei R.C. May 19—Ashburton C.R.C. May 19, 21—Te Kuiti R.C. May 26—South Canterbury J.C. June 2,4, s—Dunedin J.C. June 2,4, 6—Auckland R.C. June 2, 4—Otaki Maori R.C. Trotting: June 2, 4—Canterbury Park T.C. June 2. 4—Hawke’s Bay T.C. June 9—Ashburton T.C. June 20, 23—Auckland T.C. First race at Ashburton to-day at 12.30. Betting at Ashburton will be conducted on the 75-25 system, with one pool only. Acceptances for the South Canterbury meeting are due by 9 a.m. on Tuesday. There will be racing to-day at Ashburton, Bulls, and Te Kuiti, and trotting at Wellington. The accident to W. J. Tomkinson will necessitate a new driver being found for Indianapolis, who went to Wellington in company with Walla Walla and Auburn Lad. The Wingatui-owned two-year-old pacer Wandte Chimes is now in D. Taehen’s stable. He is owned by R. R. McDonald, who is well-known in connection with gallopers. * • * * The four Southlanders engaged in the Steeplechase at Washdyke next week—French Fleet, Calham, Cultivator and Dunmure—are expected to arrive to-day. The Oamaru Trotting Club’s winter meeting should return a very handsome profit. This Club has the unusual record of never having sustained a loss on a meeting, and it is believed that its smallest day’s profit is £l6. The draw for barrier positions in the Invitation Race at Wellington to-day resulted—Glenrpssie 1, Red Shadow 2. Impromptu 3, Harold Logan 4. Lindbergh 5, Auburn Lad 6, Walla Walla 7. Riotous was reported to have jumped unevenly in the Grandstand Steeplechase on the first day at Wanganui. On the second day, in the big race, he gave a better display, and apparently is an Intelligent horse. After his wretched display at Oamaru, it was decided not to continue Hoyle’s engagement in the Sapling Stakes. The Jack Potts youngster is speedy in private, but obviously requires racing experience. L. A. Maidens resumed driving at the Oamaru meeting last week, but met with no success. His candidate was the Invercargill mare Erin’s Fortune, whose behaviour at the barrier has not improved as a result of her holiday from the race tracks. Mountain Jewel, who won in saddle as well as in harness at Gore, is by Blue Mountain King, from a mare by the Clanranald horse Stronghold. She is a very promising pacer, and if her owner needed money she would probably have been bought for Canterbury by now. Palmary might Jiave won both principal events at Invercargill, if a tiring horse had not rolled on him and caused him to change his line in the straight. A statement has been published that Palmary has lost his hack qualification, but that is not correct, and he will probably be a runner in a long-distance hack race at Wingatui. • • • • Well-backed candidates at Ashburton should be:—Highweight, Colossian, Brown Pearl; Selma Trot, Wild Dreams, Subsidy; Autumn Handicap. Davolo, Cleaner fWater Power if a starter); Trial, Capital, Wild Sky; Fairfield Hack, Sliver Sight, Red Dance; Flying, Water Power. Royal Amphora; Rakaia Trot, Imposter, Llewellyn's Pride. Cheap Money, 8.5, defeated Red Dance 9.0 over six furlongs at Amberly, but over a mile at Ashburton Red Dance 8.7 appeals more strongly than the filly, who has not yet shown ability to go further than six furlongs. Neither reads as well as Cheap Money’s stable mate Silver Sight in 9.0.

Lord Ranald, who figures among the entrants for the steeplechase to be run at Washdyke next week, has not raced since he finished very lame in fourth place in the Grand National nearly two years ago. The Masterpiece gelding has a good record at Washdyke, having won all his races there.

Mr W. T. Hazlett recently shipped another lot of young horses to Melbourne to be trained there. The best-looking of the draft is said to be a two-year-old by Nightraid from Razzle Dazzle. Mr Hazlett now has about ten horses in Australia, one oi two of those previously sent across having been disposed of. He intends to make another trip to Victoria after the annual meeting of the Southland Racing Club in July. Colombo, the Derby favourite, is now at a longer price than before he won the Two Thousand Guineas. Some people in England allege that the colt has developed a temperament, in other words, become savage, but his trainer. Captain Low retorts that the only temperament Colombo has is that of a good horse—"he goes fast and stays.” W. Johnstone, the Australian jockey who rides the horse, is equally confident.

Riding engegements for Ashburton include:—L. J. Ellis, Davolo, Royal Amphora, Haere Tonu, Silk Arrow; A. H. Eastwood, Cleaner. Red Dance, Final Shot, Coat of Arms; W. H. Jones, Jolly Beggar, Wise Choice; G. Humphries, Martian Chief, Lowater; C. Eastwood, Rebel Chief, Rose of Tralee; M. Kirwan, Silver Sight, Silver Step, Elgindale; A Messervey, Capital, Quietly; A. Russell, Metal Bird; A. E. Ellis, Hurlingham; G. Barr, Colossian; J. W. Jennings, Tuirau; H. Turner, Knowledge; E. A. Leckie, Chrysology, Water Power. • • • • The return of all committeemen and stewards (except one who did not offer himself for re-election) of the Canterbury Jockey Club may be taken to indicate that members are satisfied with the new policy of the committee and its chairman. Had it been otherwise it is certain that at least one of the unsuccessful candidates would have secured a seat. A year or two ago there was what was termed a reform movement, but apparently it is now agreed that there is nothing to reform. It is conceded on all sides that Mt A. S. Elworthy has made an admirable chairman, and that his appointment was of benefit to the Club.
