Miniature Rifle Notes’

Activities in South Canterbury f (By “303”)

FIXTURES June 11—23: Winchester Cup Competition. (5 men teams, 20 shots) open to N.Z. July 16—28: N.Z. Miniature Rifle Championships, both Individual and teams. August 20—30: Whitcombe and Caldwell Cup Competition (5 men teams, 15 shots) open to N.Z. The Railway Club averaged 77.7 as against 74.1 the previous week. That is a great improvement. The best scores were A. Bradley 80 and J. W. Maloney 79, and there were several with 78. If this club keeps on at this rate it will soon be at the top. The main thing now is to hold the position. The South Island Ladies’ Championship may be fired in Timaru this year with the ordinary South Island Championships. This will be the first time a ladies’ championship for the South Island has been held. At the Makikihi Club the shooting was quite good, though the “tail” is H. Shea was to the front with the possible 80. This rifleman is improving.- The next best was 78. scored by two men. The Claremont Club had the fair average of 76.9, but this is not enough for Claremont. M. Smith (79) was top scorer for the week. One of the youngest riflemen in South Canterbury, both with the big rifle and the miniature, he shoots exceptionally well and should develop into a champion if he perseveres. The Fire Brigade Club averaged 75.9, about two points below what it should be. J. Murray had the only good score, with 79. This club used to be South Canterbury’s best but in the

last few years seems to have been slipping back. It is pleasing to see that the Woodbury ladies have started their Club again after years of silence. Mrs G. Cain made quite a good opening shoot with 77 off the rifle. The Timaru A Team selected to shoot for the Sydney Tisdall Cup, open New Zealand shoot, is: W. Bradshaw, W. Duncan, A. Agnew, P. Foden, and W. Falloon. The Temuka Club was down a point per man. That is bad when the club averages round about the 74-75 mark. R. Boyle, a new man, came to the front with 78 which was the only fair score. The Pareora Club returned an average of 75.8, that is up J point per man on last week’s score which did not arrive till this week. The writer is pleased to see E. Brehaut on top with 79. He was one of the most promising young shots in South Canterbury but he had lost form for the last two years. It is good to see him striking form again. He scored 78 the previous week. The Otipua Club showed a very slight improvement this week, but not one score worth mentioning was registered. There seems to be something in need of a check up. The average of St. Patrick’s Club was 76.4. This club is on the up grade. The writer is pleased to see J. Batchelor to the front again with 78 as he has not been shooting up to form for some time. The average returned by the Winchester Ladies Club was 74.5. They are improving every week and will soon place their names among the leading averages. There are only eight members so that everything has to be counted, which makes their score more credible. This week Miss L. Priddle secured the possible 80— an excellent shoot. Last week this lady made 79. She is one of the best lady shooters in South Canterbury to-day. There is no reason why she should not become a New Zealand champion. The Hunter Club averaged 77 which shows improvement each week. In another few weeks they will have quite a respectable score. This week B. Jackson 80 and F. Gibson 79 were top

Geraldine Citizens averaged 72.2. That is not a very good score for Geraldine. There were no good scores registered. The writer is pleased to have a report from Studholme Club. This is the first he has heard of them this season. H. Rollinson started off with 78. *

The ladies of South Canterbury \> be pleased to hear that the of the South Canterbury Miniati Rifle Association has received a ( nation of a beautiful rose bowl to shot for in connection with the Hj hurst Shield Competition. It is to the ladies’ South Canterbury cha pionship challenge trophy and open any lady member or member of a South Canterbury miniature rifle cl The rules and regulations will be pi lished later. The writer is pleased to see tl Arno has made a start. Only fi scores were reported, but that is start. They will soon improve. The Tisdall Cup which is being fir for all over New Zealand this we< was won last year by Hasting wi a score of 497 out of 500. The tei was W. J. Burton 100, T. Rosenb* 100, G. Beattie 100, J. M. Carmich 99, F. T. White 98. Total 497. The Timaru Club was a little doi again this week. The shooting as club is bad, only one possible bei registered again. W. Malcolm and Agnew (79) were the top scores a the only ones worth mentioning. The were four with 78. The new West End Club was open on Tuesday night. There was a lar gathering of riflemen and quite number had never fired a shot. Befo the start of the shooting Mr T. Cun (the President) extended a welcome the visitors. He said he was pleas to have with them the president of t West End Association (Mr J. E. Chile also Mr W. Duncan (president of t Timaru Association) and Mr W. 1 Best, representing the South Cante bury Association. The first rounds we fired by Miss C. Currie (who fired tl first shot). Mr W. Duncan, Mr Chil and Mr T. Currie. The range is a fii class one and takes four shooters at time. The shooters are starting < even ground with the other clubs. Gre credit is due to the president (ft Currie) for what he has done and tl writer feels sure that success must fo low. Messrs Duncan and Be addressed the members, retumii thanks for the reception they had r ceived. The Cave Club is shooting well ave aging 77.6. Miss A Gray secured ai other possible. This lady is a chan pion and she should do well befo the season is out. Jas. Gray ah secured the possible while Miss K. Grs and John Gray each got 79. This a fine record for one family. H. Gn (76) was not far away. Pleasant Point registered a splend shoot of 78.8. W. T. Taylor scored possible. He seems to be striking fori now. E. Chapman also got the pos sible. There were also four with 7 R. Blackmore, F. B. Wilson, H. I Roberts and N. McLeod. It look as if this club will take a lot of beatin this year. The Orari Ladies had an even shoe but the scores were low. Hilton Club made a good first shoe of 77.3. F. Hawke started off with possible 80 and W. Scott 79. Th club has not many members but all ai first class shots and can usually mak a name for themselves. The Orari Men did not put on goo score during the week. Best scores during the week:—Mij A. Gray (Cave), A. Bradley Railway H. Shea (Makikihi), Miss L. Priddl (Winchester), R. Jackson, (Hunter), Malcolm (Timaru), Jas. Gray (Cave W. T. Taylor (Pleasant Pt.), E. Chap man (Pleasant Pt.). F.
