PLANS TO PROLONG STRIKES
SIGNS OF GRAVE UNREST UPHEAVALS HAMPER RECOVERY United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received May 17, 9.40 p.m.) MELBOURNE. May 17. The coalminers at Wonthaggi, who 1 have been on strike for some time, have organised communal services, providing themselves with food and other necessities. They are slaughtering their own meat, conducting butchering operations, grocery shops, hairdressing saloon, and boot repairing, with the result that the local tradesmen are suffering and their employees are losing employment, which will have a boomerang effect on the union’s financial resources. The local shopkeepers have declared the miners' activities black. Matters are nearing a climax as 900 miners who are “moderates” are demanding a special meeting to discuss a settlement. They declare that it is impossible to expect relief from union employees outside the trades whose employers are experiencing the boycott.
