CHEERS FOR EMPIRE TRADE
MOVING SCENE IN PARLIAMENT CHANCELLOR’S NOTABLE UTTERANCE United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received May 17, 7.0 p.m.) LONDON, May 17. The House of Commons cheered unexpectedly at an emphatic announcement by the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Mr Neville Chamberlain), in favour of the development of Empire trade, emphasising that it was only begun at Ottawa. Mr Chamberlain in the course of the debate on the Finance Bill, said that it was unlikely that international trade for a “forseeable” period w’ould assume its former proportions. Therefore, there were two alternatives still open. Firstly, the continued expansion of the Home market, the limit of which was by no means reached, and secondly the development of inter-imperial trade. Britain must find compensation for the loss of so much foreign trade in these two directions.
