RESUMPTION OF MATCH

AUSTRALIA LOSES FIVZ WICKETS United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyrlgh t (Received May 18, 1.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 17. The weather was fine and the wicket good for the resumption of the match, Australia v. Essex. Early disaster overcame the Australians when Ponsford fell a victim to H. Smith's first ball. Apparently he tried to turn the ball to leg, cocking it up into the hands of short leg. < Darling filled the breach and hit with great vigour, taking four boundaries off Parnes’s second over. He scored 20 in ten minutes, pulling, cutting and cover-drjving in spite of the fact that Fames was bowling good pace balls, rising high up, which made no difference to Darling. Fames was taken off after bowling four overs. Eventually Darling, in trying to turn Peter Smith to leg, pushed a simple catch into the hands of forward shortleg after thirty-five minutes spectacular batting. He hit eight fours. Woodfull and McCabe continued with good, sound batting. McCabe later began forcing the pace, owing to the uncertain lasting qualities of the wicket. They scored 100 runs in an hour. Both batsmen handled Fames with complete comfort, Woodfull reaching his first 50 of the tour. When the total was 148 Fames deceived McCabe with a slower ball. McCabe went back and was clean bowled. He hit five fours. At the luncheon adjournment Australia had lost five wickets for 170 runs. Following are the scores:— ESSEX.
