“ALL BOSH”

COMMENT ON REMIT RESENTED CLASSIFYING THE CRITIC The reported remarks of the president of the Waimate Automobile Association, at a recent meeting of the Association, that a remit presented to the quarterly meeting of delegates of the South Island Motor Union at Nelson, was “all bosh,” jrere strongly criticised by the president of the South Canterbury Automobile Association (Mr J. M. Jenkins) at last night’s meeting of the Committee. The South Canterbury remit to the Union was that some action should be taken in the interests f safety first, to regulate the use of radio sets in cars, and the remarks of the Waimate president, were alleged to have been made before the remit had been considered by the Union, and rejected by a large majority. The discussion was introduced by Mr Robt. Wilson, who said that his notice had recently been directed to a statement in a New Zealand wireless journal that since the installation of radios in cars accidents in Auckland had materially increased. “That *n some degree seems to bear out that our remit was not so silly as it was made to appear,” he added. The chairman (Mr J. M. Jenkins) said that if it was in the Interests of public safety, motorists should not be averse to having another restriction placed about them. It was not the system that the Association had objected to in the remit, hut the abuse of it. Dr C. A. Paterson: It is not possible to legislate for fools. There was always someone who would abuse such a system. Lack of Courtesy. The chairman said that as a result of the remit the South Canterbury Association had been made to appear ridiculous. Referring to remits in general and the South Canterbury remit in particular, he did not think it was an act of courtesy on the part of other Automobile Associations to offer any criticism until they had heard both sides of a question. The president of the Waimate Association, was reported to have remarked that the remit regarding radios in cars was “all bosh.” That comment had been passed before the quarterly meeting of the South Island Motor Union at Nelson, and in his opinion It was an act of discourtesy that any remit coming from any Association should be ridiculed. Dr Paterson: It might have been Injudicious, but criticism of that kind only classifies the critic. The chairman: I do not suppose you want anything further done Mr Wilson? Mr Wilson: No I was just drawing attention to what had appeared in the wireless publication.
