MEETING OF COMMITTEE

JUNE PROGRAMME APPROVED Arrangements for the May meeting were considered at a meeting of the Committee of the South Canterbury Jockey Club yesterday. Present: Messrs D. Grant (chairman), H. Lowry, C. L. Orbell, J. E. P. Cameron, H. H. Fisher, Herbert Elworthy, T. Seaton and T. R. Rhodes. The chairman welcomed Mr Fisher to the committee in place of Mr W. Morrison. He said that some years ago Mr Fisher had been a member of the committee, and members would be pleased to see him again associated with the administration of the club. He was particularly gratified to see Mr Lowry present after his serious illness, and expressed a hope that Mr Lowry would long continue his good work in the interests of the Club. Dates For 1935. The secretary (Mr H. H. Fraser) said that he had communicated with the Ashburton Club regarding dates for 1935, and had received a reply that as South Canterbury raced on June 23 this year, the relative date for 1935 would be June 22. The Ashburton letter had been forwarded to the District Committee, and from newspaper reports it appeared that South Canterbury next year would be obliged to race at the corresponding period to this year instead of a week later as asked for. The proposal of the Timaru Trotting Club to erect a new booth at the racecourse was endorsed, and the terms approved along the lines of a report presented by a joint subcommittee of the Jockey, Hunt and Trotting Clubs. It was agreed that the Jockey Club dismantle the old booth. The secretary was granted permission to attend the annual conference of secretaries to be held in Wellington on July 6. Reporting on the April meeting the racecourse inspector (Mr J. Torrance) stated that it was a very orderly gathering over which the usual’ strict control was exercised. The stipendary steward (Mr N. McLean) reported that the tiack was in good order. The meeting had been

very successful, and ably conducted in every way. The racing had been very clean and called for no intervention on the part of the Judicial Committee. The Judicial Committee for the May meeting, was appointed as follows: Messrs C. L. Orbell, A. S. Elworthy, H. H. Fisher, C. H. Gresson and Jas. Scott. The resignation of Mr J. T. Brady was accepted with regret, and Messrs A. E. Sandral, J. E. Blackmore, and W. R. Grant were elected members. Remit to Conference. On the suggestion of Mr Orbell it was agreed to submit a remit to the Conference asking that Rule 191 be amended to provide that \ hack should be a horse which has not won a race worth more than £l5O, instead of £250. or a collective value of stakes of more than £3OO, instead of £SOO as at present.
