May 24 Gale, Lytelton May 25 Karetu, Lyttelton May 28 NOTES. The Wingatui arrived from Dunedin yesterday to load for Wellington and Auckland. She sailed last evening for Lyttelton and Picton. The Holmdale called from Oamaru yesterday to take Wellington, Picton, and Wanganui shipments. She departed later for Lyttelton. To-day the Totara is set down to arrive from Dunedin to load for Wellington and New Plymouth. The Parera should be an arrival this evening from Dunedin. After loading for Wellington, Nelson, Wanganui, New Plymouth and Waikato she is to proceed via Lyttelton. The Port Waikato should be here from Dunedin to-day to load for Wellington, Tauranga, Auckland and Whangerei. She is to sail this evening for Lyttelton. Taranaki in Port The Shaw, Savill and Albion vessel Taranaki arrived from Lyttelton yesterday afternoon and was taken to No. 3 wharf. She will load frozen meat and general cargo here for London and is expected to sail to-morrow for Oamaru. Maimoa Due To-day The Maimoa is expected to arrive from Port Chalmers to-day to continue loading frozen meat and general cargo for London and West Coast ports of the United Kingdom. She should get away for Lyttelton to-morrow. Evolution of the Tanker Probably the oldest vessel in existence carrying petroleum in bulk is the tanker Looch, plans of which were approved by Lloyd’s Register in July, 1886. She continued to appear in the register under the name of Loutsch, and later Lady Elinor, until 1928. The vessel was of Russian nationality, and in that year her name was omitted from the register as it was reported she had been taken over by the Soviet authorities in the Black Sea, and no trace of her could be found. When the Russian Government issued its first “Register of Ships” in 1923, she appeared under the name of Chaumian, under which name she again appears in Lloyd's Register.
