WOODBURY

MEETING OF MEN'S CLUB. There was a large attendance of members and visitors at the club meeting on Tuesday night, to hear an address by Miss Beryl Stevens on “the history of China.” Canon Coursey presided and introduced Miss Stevens who on rising to speak was received with applause. Miss Stevens referred to the advanced civilisation, of China nearly 3000 years ago and mentioned a Chinese League of Nations containing 14 signatories to outlaw war in 456 B.C. China, Miss Stevens said, had given much learning to the west in the past and much could still be learned from her to-day. There was no doubt China would yet play a big part In the affairs of nations, particularly as the international centre of world politics was moving to the Pacific. A vote of thanks to Miss Stevens concluded a very interesting address. Supper was handed round by the male members of the club. THE WEATHER. A sudden change from nor’-west to south-west on Tuesday brought heavy rain, .38 points falling during the day. A heavy frost of nine degrees was registered yesterday morning. PERSONAL. Miss Wilson (Christchuich) is staying with Mrs G. H. Kerr, Woodbury.
