PROMISING GOLD FIND

CLAIM IN WAIOTAHI AREA. Three prospectors who have been working for about two years on a claim next to the borough quarry up the Waiotahi Creek, had two loads of quartz, including 131 b of picked stone, crushed last week at the Thames School of Mines battery, for a return of 21ozs lldwt. of high-grade gold, which is expected to realise more than £5 an ounce. The miners are Messrs A. Clarke, T. Polton and W. Dabb, who are working the Christmas Eve claim. The ground from which the gold was obtained is maiden ground, although the miners commenced working in an old drive. The drive has been cleaned out, timbered and developed, and in the last few months driving operations have returned some splendid quartz. The first crushing of 131 tons some time ago returned 7oz 19dwt„ and the next load of 21 tons yielded soz 12dwt. The drive follows a leader about 3ft wide. The claim is in the Waitohi area, from which many rich finds have been won in past years. Another interesting feature is that the leader extends seaward toward the adjoining Commissioner claim, at present held by the Thames Prospecting Association.
