NEW WAYS OR OLD.
When our grandmothers spent long hours sewing neat buttonholes and stitching on buttons they little thought that in days to come gowns would fasten with zip ribbons, or coats be closed with metal clips. Still less would they have approved the latest device on the tweed suits worn in London this season, where the jackets joined with big wooden buttons tied on with stout string passed through generoussized holes! In direct contrast to such modernity were the blouses of demure cashmere and sober-faced delaine which accompanied many woollen suits, while some of the evening wraps were cut on the dignified lines of a cardinal’s robes, buttoning sedately from neck to hem, and with shoulder capes for extra effect.
