GERALDINE

OBITUARY MR EDWARD KENNEDY The death occurred recently of Mr Edward Murphy, a widely known and much respected resident of Pleasant Valley, in his seventy-sixth year. A native of County Kilkenny, Ireland, Mr Murphy came out to New Zealand as a youth of 18, landing at Port Chalmers. He found work on the Taieri Plains, and later went to Timaru, where he was employed on the building of the first breakwater. Mr Murphy then came to Geraldine and was engaged for some years as groom and gardener to the Rev. Father Kane, who was then in charge of the Geraldine Catholic Parish. He subsequently engaged in road building contracts and in shearing at various stations in the Four Peaks country. On his marriage to Miss E. M. O’Flanagain, of Pleasant Valley, 47 years ago, he took up land at the Valley, where he resided till the time of his death. Mr Murphy took a keen interest in the affairs of the Pleasant Valley School, and was a member of the committee for 30 years, being chairman for 27 years. He was a member of the Patriotic Committee during the Great War, one of the early members of the original Farmers’ Union, and a founder of the Geraldine Branch of the Shearers’ Union, of which he was chairman, and delegate to numerous conferences.

The cortege at the funeral was a very long one. The Rev. Father M. J. Fogarty, who celebrated Requiem Mass at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Geraldine, also conducted* the service at the graveside. The bearers were Messrs William, John, Thomas and Richard Murphy (sons). Mrs Murphy and a family of five sons and six daughters are left to mourn their loss.
