WAIMATE

FEDERATED CATHOLIC CLUBS EASTER CONFERENCE The Executive of the Waimate Catholic Club has completed arrangements for the forthcoming conference and competitions of the Federated Catholic Clubs and Societies of New Zealand, which will be held in Waimate on March 31, April 1 and 2.

Mr A. E. Lawrence, editor of “The Timaru Herald," will act as judge of the prepared debate and oratory, and Mr W. Thomas, M.A., Rector of the Timaru Boys’ High School, will act in a similar capacity for the elocutionary competition. The religious questions competition will be judged by the Rev. Father Finlay, M.A., of Mosgiel Seminary. Mr G. Dash, Mayor of Waimate, will judge the impromptu speech. At the last competitions in Christchurch during Easter, 1933, very favourable comments were passed by the various judges on the standard attained which promises this year, judging by the entries, to be in no way inferior. Masterton is sending down a team keen on winning the shield, and the West Coast will be represented by St. Columba Club. Greymouth, an organisation that has collected many trophies and has made a name for itself in West Coast competitions. Thee teams will compete from Christchurch, one from Marist Old Boys and Catholic Club (holders of the Hayward Shield), one from St. Mary's Literary and Debating Society, and one from St. Bede’s Old Boys’ Association.

The Timaru Catholic Club which won the Hayward Shield in 1931 and lost it in 1932 is sending a welltrained team in an endeavour to regain it. St. Joseph's Literary and Debating Society will be represented by a team capable of upholding local traditions, and will at the same time give the visiting teams true Waimate hospitality. The youngest but not the least important Club comes from Oamaru, and Dunedin is sending up four teams representing old established clubs—Dunedin Hibernian Social and Debating Club, St. Patrick’s Social Club (South Dunedin), North East Valley Catholic Club, and the University Catholic Students’ Club. The Hayward Shield is held by the

Marist Brothers Old Boys and Catholic Club, Christchurch, will be awarded to the club gaining the highest number of shield points, and the shield will be presented to the winning club by Bishop Brodie, at the end of the banquet.

INGENIOUS DEVICE. On Thursday morning a trial was held in the Waimate County Council yards of a portable shingle hoist designed by the county engineer (Mr W. P. Black) with the object of reducing shingling costs by employing the men at the source of supply during the time the lorries are nlying to and from their destination. The contrivance wa3 made at very little expense from odds and ends of old bridge material mounted on the chassis of a lorry, the engine and body of which have gone out of commission. By means of a twoman winch a hopper containing 21 cubic yards of metal is raised to a sufficient height to permit of the lorries pulling alongside and loading in about two minutes on the release of a dscharge lever. The demonstration given proved satisfaetpry in every respect and the contrivance when put into regular commission wall effect a big saving to the county.

WINTER SHOW COMMITTEE. A meeting of the committee of the Waimate Winter Show and Poultry Society was presided over by the president (Mr J. H. Betten) others present being Messrs W. F. George, J. Hutt, H. Bishop, J. Carbis. J. H. Johns, C. Coventry and L. V. Brenton. The Oamaru Society notified that a member had been appointed to obtain entries for the Waimate Show. The president and Messrs George, Bishop, Wilce and F. Creba were appointed a schedule committee. It was resolved that all grain entries must be new season’s. The question of holding a tug-of-war was left in the hands of Mr Hutt. The secretary was instructed to arrange for the use of the same building as last year. RUGBY SUB-UNION. At a meeting of the Waimate Rugby Sub-Union there were present;—The president (Mr D. Keyes', and Messrs J V. Riach, A. J. Harris, G. Kilworth. R. Eddy, H. V. Barford, A. Bringans and J. C. Winning. The South Canterbury Union advised that the annual meeting would take place on March 19, and Messrs Keyes and Eddy were appointed the Sub-Union’s delegates to the meeting. It was desolved that the annual meeting of the Sub-Union be held on April 9. Members responsible for drawing up the lease for Manchester Park were thanked for their services. The secretary was instructed to inform the clubs that applications for the transfer of players must be in the hands of the secretary by April 30. A vote of appreciation was extended to the president on the able manner in which he had conducted the business during the past season, to which Mr Keyes suitably replied. TENNIS. The officials of the North Otago Tennis Association will pay a visit to Waimate on Thursday next to present the cups and trophies won in connection with the Waihao-Sub-Associacion and the North Otago senior championships. In addition the banner won by the Waimate Club will be presented at a grand ball organised by the SubAssociation. Details of tho ball at which the latter presentations will be made are advertised in another column of this paper. STOCK SALE. The Studholme ewe fair has so far drawm an entry of 11.500 sheep drawn from the annual drafts of the most prominent breeders in the Waimate district. HIGH SCHOOL FETE. In order to raise funds for general expenditure a fete has been organised by the Waimate High School to commence at 2 p.m. on Thursday next. Various competitions and amusements will be held in the school grounds to which admission is free, and in the evening laboratory demonstrations will be given at 7 o’clock and a concert supplied by a talented Oamaru party will be given in the school at 8 o’clock. To assist the funds, cakes, sweets, produce, afternoon tea and ice cream stalls have been organised, and a full measure of public support is confidently anticipated.
