TEMUKA

CALEDONIAN SOCIETY ANNUAL SPORTS In fine though rather hot weather, the forty-fourth annual gathering of the Temuka Caledonian Society was held in the Domain yesterday. Preceded by a procession of pipe bands and members to the ground, the meeting commenced only a few minutes late, but for the remainder of the afternoon the events were most expeditiously handled. There was a fairly large attendance, but the gate takings, £6l/3/6, were £lO lower than last year. The cycle track, since its reconditioning, was in better condition than for some years, and the grass track was fast and even. Some good performances were recorded in the running events, notably the 100 yards, in which the winner, G. C. Foster, clocked 10 seconds dead. An innovation, in the form of a tug-of-war contest in tw T o grades, proved an attraction, the pulls and semi-finals being watched with the keenest interest. The heavyweight section was won by Keighley’s of Christchurch, which beat Mead (Rakaia), and the lightweight by Hardie and Thomson’s team which beat Gleniti. Soft drink and sweet stalls and sideshows enlivened proceedings, and the Ashburton and Temuka Pipe Bands were in attendance. A feature of the afternoon was the manoeuvres of the massed bands. The officials were:—President, Mr A. Russell; vice-presidents, Messrs W. D. McCallum and A. W. Buzan; treasurer, Mr W. F. Evans; secretary, Mr J. H. Denison; standard-bearer, Mr F. In connection with the visit of the Ashburton Pipe Band to Temuka yesterday, a complimentary dinner was tendered to both visitors and hosts by the proprietor of the Empire Hotel (Mr M. M.'Coffey) last evening. At the conclusion of the dinner, Drummer D. Milne made the presentation of some gifts purchased as a result of a collection to the waitresses who had attended them. He said the bandsmen appreciated very much the attention and service that had been given them, and there had been a very liberal response to his appeal for a collection. Drummer D. Milne then called on the Chief of the Ashburton Band (Mr H. St. Clair) to make the presentation. Mr St. Clair said his men appreciated too. the kindness, civility and attention that had been given them. They had had a good time at Temuka a year ago, and again yesterday, and he hoped they would be in Temuka next year to partake of the splendid hospitality that Temuka people could extend. Cheers and the singing of "For They Are Jolly Good Fellows" followed, and on behalf of the waitresses, Mr Coffey responded. He said that anything the girls or he had done was a pleasure, and they would be glad to do it again. The men of both bands were a splendid lot of fellows and a credit to their towns and bands. (Cheers.)
