PLEASANT VALLEY SCHOOL PICNIC AND DANCE The annual school picnic was held to the Pleasant Valley school grounds on Thursday under ideal conditions. A large number of parents and residents was present, and a well arranged programme of games and races was conducted, credit being due to the committee and those who assisted to make it a success. In the afternoon the prizes were presented by the Deputy-Mayor of Geraldine (Mr J. R. Lack). In introducing Mr Lack, the chairman of the School Committee (Mr J. Brophy) expressed pleasure that Mr Lack had again agreed to perform the prize-giving, as 'this was the second year he had done them this honour. Mr Brophy also spoke to eulogistio terms of the work of Mr S. Drew, who was to charge of the school. Seven pupils had sat for the proficiency examination, and four had passed, and the other three had gained competency certificates. Mr Brophy also extended a cordial welcome to Mr Murphy, an old resident, who, some time ago. had been on the School Committee for 281 years, and who had served as chairman for almost half of that period. Mr Brophy said that they were delighted to have Mr Murphy in their midst that day. (Applause.) The prize list Is as follows: Form n —Geoffrey Hammond 1, Joan Brophy (dux) 2, Jim Comber (dux) 3. The medals were donated by Mrs Redmond, and special prizes were:— Gardening—Girls: Joan Brophy (Mr J. R. Lack’s prize) 1, Marion Woolford and Dorothy Hibbs. equal 2; boys: Andrew Opie and Harold Cooks (Mr S. Drew's prize': essay, Geoffrey Hammond (Mrs Scowen’s prize': arithmetic. Geoffrey Hammond (Mr J. Brophy’s prize). In the evening a dance was held in the Pleasant Valley Hall, the children attending in fancy dress. The grand march and parade of competitors was under the charge of Mr T. Robinson, who acted as master of ceremonies. The task of judging, which was to the hands of Mr and Mrs A. G. Bryant (Geraldine) was no easy one. Before dispersing the children danced two figures of the D’Alberts. The prizes were won as follow:—Best girl's dress, Marion Woolford (Old English lady); best boy's dress, Jim Comber (Father Christmas) 1, Hugh Crottv (Airman* 2; most comical boy, Jack Sharpe (dog): most original girl. Joan Brophy (Cadbury’s chocolates'; infants. Rona Crotty (Red Riding Hood) and Trixie Sharpe (Pierrette) equal 1. A special prize was given by the Judges to Mrs Redmond, who appeared with the children as “Mother Hubbard." Others in fancy dress were:—Betty and Vera Opie (Japanese), Alice Warns (Eastern Lady), Dorothy Hibbs (Rose), Connie Sharpe (Plume Oil). Maurice Walker (Indian Chief). Andrew Opie (Indian). Raymond Sharpe (Chinese), John Brophv (swagger). Geoffrey Hammond (Father Christmas). Pat Gregan (Father Christmas). Harold Waidie (cowboy). Robert Hammvnd (rooster), and Algar Temple (beekeeper). Extras were played by Miss Lawler and Mr S. Drew. During the evening a song "Lullaby” was contributed by Miss Marion Woolford. GAPES VALLEY SCHOOL A large number of parents and friends attended the Gapes Valley School picnic held to the school grounds last week. Mr Ashby kindly lent a paddock for the races, and various games were also played, to which the adults also took part. The distribution of the prizes took place to the school, where the children sang several Christmas carols. Mrs A. Mackenzie acting as accompanist. In presenting the prizes the chairman of the School Committee (Mrs W. P. D. Barker) paid a tribute to the services of the teacher. Miss Clark, and he also complimented the children whose good work was due to the interest which Miss Clark showed to her pupils at all times. THE HOLIDAY. Conditions were bright and fine in Geraldine yesterday. The town was quiet for the holiday, many residents motoring to Tlmaru for the day.
