Mr G. C. Rodda, assistant secretary ol the Treasury, left Timaru yesterday on his return to Wellington. The Rev. Father Kerley. SM., left Timaru yesterday by the express for the north.

A cable message from London reports that Dr. Cyril Norwood is resigning from the headmastership of Harrow in the summer, for the presidency of St. John's College, Oxford. A cable message from Sydney states that advice has been received by Canon W. G. Hilliard, headmaster of Trinity Grammar School. Dulwich Hill, that he has been unanimously selected as Bishop of Nelson (New Zealand), in succession to Bishop Sadlier. Canon Hilliard, who is regarded as one of the most popular evangelicals in the Anglican Church life of Australia, is a forceful, convincing preacher, with a distinct appeal to young people. He stated yesterday that he had not yet begun to think about the offer from Nelson, owing to being in the thick of his speech day preparations. Mr H. A. A. Aitken, M.Sc., formerly of Dunedin, has been elected a fellow of the Institute of Chemists. After taking his degree at the University of Otago, Mr Aitken was engaged in the cancer research work which is being carried on at the Otago Medical School, under the direction of Dr. A. M. Begg. by the New Zealand branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign. He went to England towards the end of list year to continue cancer research work there. He is a brother of Dr. A. C. Aitken. D.Sc.. M.A.. F.R.SX., a noted mathematician on the staff of the University o? Edinburgh, who was recently mentioned in cabled pres* messages from London, concerning some remarkable feats of memory and of swift calculation
