AWARDS FOR AGRICULTURE. The following awards for agricultural competitions had been made, tlie Agricultural Manual and Technical Committee reported to Wednesday's meeting of the Canterbury Education P?ard: — M'Farlane Shield < present holder, Ouruhia) — Ouruhia, 130 points, 1. North Canterbury awards — Ouruhia, 130 points, 1; Parnassus, 122 points, 2; Rangiora. 120 points, 3. Sole charge section —Ouruhia, 130 points, 1; Broomfield. 112 points, 2; Aylesbury, 10(5 points, 3. Ashburton County awards —Springbum, 124 points, 1; Ealing and Chtrtsay, 117 points, equal, 2. Ashburton County competition, solo charge section—Ealtng and Chertsev, 117 points, equal, 1; Maronan. 104 points, 2. Hurdley Shield and South Canterbury competition. Hurdley Shield (present holder, Temuka): Temuka, 117 points, 1. Order of merit: Temuka, 117 points. " Waimate, 114 points, 2; Geraldine. 112 points, 3. Sole charge section: Rosewill, 107 points. 1; Salisbury, 105 points. 2; Kapua. 99 points. 3. It was agreed that the usual cash value prizes 1 . awarded and that congratulatory letters be written to the successful schools. In adopting the report members commented favourably on the general improvement in the standard of the agricultural work, and it was accordingly recommended that a special resolution expressing the board’s appreciation of this improvement be placed on record. The recommendation was adopted. Recommendations for awards in special competitions amongst South Canterbury schoolr were adopted, as follows: — Nursery work and plant propagation. —Arowhenua 1, Timaru South 2. Conduct and record of a main study. —Geraldine 1. Willowbridge 2. Consideration of the matter of award of environment certificates to South Canterbury schools was deferred untlf a future meeting. It was agrixd to thank the Farmers’ Union for their offer and to ad- e that the board will be glad to offer suggestions for the award of t* prizes, if so desired. “A memorandum from the secretary of the Seddon Memorial Technical College was read drawing attention to the position acco Jed agriculture in the public examination* conduct: by the Education Department and the New Zealand University and asking the ; card’s support in the matter of urging that the marks for agriculture in these examinations be made at least equal with those accorded for Eng!!:'-., which is at present evidently considered the most important subject. It was agreed to support the Seddon Technical Col- | lege in this matter and when replying to enclose a copy of the board's recommendations for rural courses at r’Lstrict high school*, rece-.ly submitt- 1 to the department.”
