Mr Robert Bell, of Christchurch, has returned from Australia, where he has spent several months. Dr Beeby. of Canterbury College, will be the speaker at the prize distribution of the Boys’ High School to-night. Captain W. Furlonger. an English tourist, after a sojourn in Papeete, returned by the Maunganui this week for a further tour of the Dominion. At a meeting of directors of the Caledonian Society last night. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of Mr Shepherd Hughes, an old competitor and a member of the Society for many years. Mr J. M. Niall, chairman of directors and managing director of Goldsbrough, Mort. and Co., Ltd., Melbourne, has arrived at Auckland from Sydney. He intends taking the curative waters of Rotorua, and visiting the Ellerslie racecourse during the Christmas holidays. Dr. J. Kitching and Mrs Hitching, of Cobham. Surrey, England, arrived this week by the Monowai from Sydney on a visit to Lady tVigram. of Christchurch. who is Mrs Kitching's sister. They will stay in New Zealand for some months, and they will then return to England via Panama. A cable message from Freemantie reports that among the Orama's passengers for New Zealand are Sir Walter and Lady Windham. Viscount Long of Wraxall. aide-de-camp to the Gov-ernor-General of New Zealand: also Viscountess Long. The Orama is due in Sydney on December 21. Sir Walter Windham is a pioneer in aviation. Dr. G. W. Coats, formerly of Canterbury. who has been living in retirement at Harrow-on-the-Hill, England, since his departure from New Zealand eight years ago. arrived from Sydney this week by the Monowai. accompanied by Mrs Coats and their two daughters. Misses V and M. Coats. Dr. Coats was superintendent of the Waipukurau Hospital during the war years. With his family he will remain in the Dominion for the summer months before returning to England. The regard in which the Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department (Mr G. McNamara) is held, was evidenced by an attendance of 300 officers of the Department who assembled at Wellington yesterday to wish him well on the eve of his departure as the delegate of the New Zealand Government to the International Postal Union Conference, which is to open at Cairo early in February. Mr McNamara will leave by the Monowai to-morrow. During his absence. Mr J. Robertson, First Assistant Secretary, will act as head of the Department.
