BOWLING

SOUTH CANTERBURY CENTRE MATTERS OF INTEREST TO CLUBS A number of matters of general interest were discussed by members of the South Canterbury Bowling Centre at the meeting which was held last night. There were present—Messrs H. Carlton (president), R. Watson, S. Taylor, E. Darroch, G. B. Green, A. R. Clark, R. G. Sampson, F. B. Hawkey and R. H. Taylor. Steans Cup. Referring to the Steans Cup, the chairman said that Christchurch sent down a strong team, and scored a merited win. The emergency committee had amended the programme, which had worked very smoothly. He said that they did not want the cup contest to become a chronic affair; last year they had won only one rink, and this year Christchurch had again had a comfortable win, the average over all heads being about 2J. He would- give members an opportunity later of putting forward suggestions in an endeavour to secure the cup. The chairman said that the Kia Toa green had been in good order, and it was unfortunate that a shower of rain had been experienced. In this connection, a letter was received from the secretary of the Christchurch Centre, expressing thanks for the hospitality extended to Christchurch players during their visit to Timaru. Referring to the selection of teams, Mr S. Taylor suggested that the selectors should have a fixed time and place. The chairman was of the opinion that with all their committees they should have a convener, and this would get over many of the difficulties. In the past all the arrangements had been left to the secretary. Mr Green contended that if a committee was appointed to carry out a certain job, it should do so, and if anything went wrong, then the committee only -would be to blame. The chairman said that this had been his idea right from tne very start of the year. Mr Hawkey said that the chairman or vice-chairman in the past had attended committee meetings, but he had not voted. In order to get over the trouble, he would move that a convener be appointed for each committee. The motion was carried. Mr Watson was then appointed convener of the emergency committee, and Mr Sampson convener of the match committee. Duties of Committees. Mr Sampson asked for a definition of the duties of the match committee and of the emergency committee. It seemed to him that the match committee was purely a selection committee, whereas in the rules they were supposed to inspect the greens, arrange for catering and pick the teams. They had not been consulted in the matter of the s lection of a green for the Steans Cup. Members expressed the opinion that the match committee was concerned with the selection of teams only, the other work being left to the emergency committee. A general discussion followed, Mr Clark stating that the chairman or vice-chairman should attend all meetings of committees, also the secretary, to take a record of proceedings. Mr Darroch disagreed -with Mr Clark, stating that committees should do their own work, and advise the secretary, who would execute any work necessary. The chairman said that members could do as they liked next year, but this year he desired the committees to do their own work, and advise the secretary in writing of their decisions. Arising out of this, discussion ensued regarding the selection of the Steans Cup team. Mr Green said that the club selectors were arked to send in the names of the best four players, and two emergencies, and such being the case, the selectors should have picked the best 32 players, regardless of clubs, but this had not been done. Mr Sampson said that in the past an endeavour had been made to give all clubs representation, and the selectors had pursued this policy again this year. Mr Green said that this had led to some players being chosen who were inferior to some of those nominated. The matter was discussed at some length, and it was agreed to recommend to the selectors that in future representative matches the best 32 players be chosen. Murray Bowl Contest. In connection with the match against North Otago for the Murray Bowl, it was decided to communicate with North Otago and suggest that the game be played on January 27, the day of the United Friendly Societies’ picnic at Oamaru. Championship and Pennants. It was agreed to play the opening games in the second round of the championsip and pennants on Saturday, and the second series of games on January 20. Bowl Testing. The question of the charge for bowl testing was raised by Mr Sampson, who asked what charge had been laid down by the New Zealand Council. The chairman replied that it was 3/-, plus 9d for each bowl tested. Mr Sampson then asked why the tester had been charging 4 -. The secretary replied that 1/- went to the Centre to help defray the cost of the testing apparatus. Mr Sampson: The Centre has no power to make the extra charge. The secretary replied that there was a resolution on the books to this effect. After further discussion, it was agreed that Mr Clark and the emergency committee should go into the matter and bring down a report. Christmas Tournament. The secretary reported that so far 20 entries had been received for the rinks at the Christmas tournament. It was decided to play the rinks on West End and Kia Toa. the emergency green to be Timaru. Unmarked Bowls. Another matter which was brought up by Mr Sampson was that of unmarked bowls. He said there were quite a number of bowls at present which were unmarked, and some players had adopted the practice of turning bowls over to identify them. It was agreed to draw the attention of clubs to the rule governing the compulsory marking of bowls. Australian Standard. Mr Hawkey asked for the opinion of the Centre regarding the proposed change in the New Zealand standard to the Australian test bowl. It was unanimously decided to ob- !

ject to any alteration to the New Zealand standard. Christmas Greetings. The chairman extended best wishes for the Christmas season to members of the Centre. Thursday Championship. Congratulations were extended by the chairman to the Temuka Club on ■ winning the Thursday championship.
