The greatest possible confusion continues to exist in regard to wine and liquor imports, in face of the popular demand and persisting high prices for domestic as well as foreign supplies available for retail liquor stores in the country. Liquor as Bargaining Weapon. It is reported that lower import i taxes for French wines and liquors in return for lower tariff rates for American agricultural products has ; been definitely offered to the French Ambassador by the State Department, and Sir Ronald Lindsay (British Ambassador to the United States) visited the State Agricultural Departments in reference to British exports of Scotch and Irish whisky, in return for Americans pork and butter. Those countries which had no liquor exports before prohibition, continue to work in the [ dark. It is known that Australia, South Africa and the Argentine are among the countries which, despite persistent application, and reference to authorities, have been able to make only a little headway. It Is felt that a variety of considerations impel the authorities. While they are obviously anxious in no way to Impede legitimate importers, it is Indicated that the aim of the American Government Is to give the greatest present opportunities to domestic producers, to such time as Congress after the New Year provides permanent regulations.
