EXTENSION OF TERM OF OFFICE. By Telegraph—Pre*s Association WELLINGTON, December 12. Explaining the Education Amendment Bill which was Introduced by Governor-General’s message in the House to-night, the Rt. Hon. G. W Forbes said that it proposed to extend the term of office of school committees from one year to two. It had been introduced at the request of the School Committees Association which had contended that a longer term would result in a better continuity of policy. There were several other minor matters in the Bill. Mr W. E. Barnard (Lab.. Napier) It is practically an education "Washing Up" Bill. Mr Forbes: Yes. The Bill was read a first time. The measure also provides that teachers receiving superannuation allowances will not be appointed to positions except in special circumstances. The idea is to relieve unemployment. With the approval of the Chancellor of the University students receiving scholarships may postpone the commencement term of the award for a year. Provision is also made for the conduct of a school which is newly established or reopened between the dates of the biennial election of committees.
