UNEMPLOYMENT BOARD MAYOI.3 COMMENTS Grave concern at the Unemployment Board’s apparent lack of sympathy towards the unemployed was expressed yesterday by the Mayor (Mr A. W. Buzant in a statement issued to “The Timaru Herald.’’ “I certainly think some comment is necessary on the use which is being made of the Beard’s funds (special taxation for relief)’’ he said, “also their action in withdrawing relief from single men and making all round reductions in allocations. Their action has made the position of the unemployed definitely worse. Many of these unfortunate people, through no fault of their own, have been on relief for nearly thre years and their position is becoming more desperate as time goes on. During the last few weeks urgent appeals have been made to the Board to reinstate the cuts but they have persistently declined to do so. The Board’s avowed reason for its action is that seasonal work is available and that reservation of funds for the winter months is necessary. The amount of seasonal work available is a suggestion not borne out by facts, and the reservation of funds is hardly a reliable excuse when one reads of the Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Co., being subsidised from the unemployment funds. "It is now’ over two weeks since I, on behalf of my committee, sent an urgent message to the Board for increased assistance, but to date they have not thought it worth while to reply. Therefore the only conclusion one can come to is that the Board is unsympathetic and out of touch with the position.” METHODIST SUNDAY SCHOOL.
