“HER FIRST MATE”
GREAT COMEDY AT MAJESTIC. According to the “Captain’s” calculations they were 100 miles up the Amazon River; in actual fact they were bowling merrily along under full sail toward a United States destroyer which has just decided to put a shot across their bows because they had the reputation of being much-wanted rum runners. Which is only one of the many amusing adventures into which Slim Summerville’s new passion for salt sea water and bellying canvas leads him and his supporting cast in “Her First Mate,” the Universal comedy which began on Saturday, at the Majestic Theatre. In his latest venture, Zazu Pitts is once again Slim’s partner, but she takes second place to his ambition to go down to the sea in ships. “Oh, dear!” wails Zasu in her well-known manner and flutters her hands reproachfully as every fresn trouble looms on the horizon; but the elongated Summerville stalks out of her life for a life of his own on the ocean wave. It is a good comedy, but it is a comedy that is made of slightly sterner stuff than most; and there are moments when it verges on the pathetic.
