COST OF EDUCATION

DECREASE OF £606,041. (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, November 7. The report of the Minister of Education for the year ending December, 1932, was presented In the House today. The report states that the aim of the Government has been to maintain the efficiency of the education system at as high a standard as possible and to curtail only those educational facilities which are very desirable in a time of prosperity, but which cannot be provided in a time of depression. It could be truly said that the opportunities now available have not impaired the chances of the youth of the Dominion to compete on equal terms educationally with young people in other parts of the Empire. For the year the total cost of education amounted to £2,863,802, against £3,469,843 in the previous year, a decrease of £606,041. The expenditure represented a cost of £l/17/5 a head of the population. The net capital expenditure on the erection of school buildings for 1932-33 was £52,623 as against £259,148 for 1931-32 and £501,344 for 1930-31.
