MURDER OF DERELICT
FOUR MEN SENTENCED TO DEATH. VICTIM KILLED FOR INSURANCE. United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph Copyright (Received October 22. 6.30 p.m.) NEW YORK. October 20. Four men have been sentenced to death for the murder of Michael "Durable” Malloy, a derelict, whom they destroyed to collect 1788 dollars life insurance, they placed upon him. The sobriquet came from the multiplicity of ways they tried to kill him before being finally successful. One of the murderers, an operator of a speakeasy, kept the victim constantly intoxicated, while they fed him with wood alcohol, poisoned oysters, spoiled sardines, mixed with chopped tin. They left him exposed to bitter weather; ran him down by a taxicab, and finally, indesperation, asphyxiated him with cooking gas.
