IMPERIAL RECIPROCITY

POWERFUL ARGUMENT. The improvement in the meat export trade, affecting as it does all stockraisers, including the dairyman who turns out large quantities of swine products, is a powerful argument for the policy of Imperial reciprocity. There can be no doubt that Britain has been generous to the Dominions in her interpretation of what reciprocity should mean. The Imperial authorities have met with embarrassing problems at home because of special claims for preference made by local producers, and the dislocation of vested Interests associated with foreign imports. They have been obliged to suffer attacks from influential sections of exporters, and in other ways they have made many sacrifices on the altar of inter-imperial trade. But these au-

thorities have not wavered in their determinination to uphold the spirit of Ottawa, and already Australia has benefited more, perhaps, than the people in any other part of the Empire.
