SAFETY OF HARBOUR
FARMERS CONCERNED. “That this branch considers that definite action is required to keep the port of Timaru in a first-class condition by taking steps to prevent the silting up of the harbour” was a remit received from the Pleasant Point branch at yesterday's meeting of the South Canterbury Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union. In moving the remit Mr C. Ley said that the Union should keep its eyes open to the fact that Caroline Bay was gradually silting up. If a ship were to run aground here it would leave a bad impression in the minds of shipowners throughout the world. Mr L. V. Talbot said he had discussed the matter with Mr A. F. Campbell, a member of the Harbour Board, and In his opinion it would be wiser not to pass any motion until further information was secured. The chairman (Mr A. Ward) said that the chairman of the Harbour Board (Mr G. T. Dawson» intended giving an address > the Chamber of Commerce shortly, and the matter could be discussed at a later meeting, this course being agred to.
