HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
SMALL LOSS ON SPRING SHOW MEETING OF COMMITTEE Tiie spring show staged recently by the Timaru Horticultural Society resulted in a loss of £6 15 '-, according to statements made at a meeting of the committee over which Mr G. E. Knowles presided last night. Present — Mesdames G. J. Wallace, X. Segar. W. Rooney. G. E. Knowles, R. D. King, R. H. Rhodes. M. Sutherland. F. Barker, Messrs G. Bowker. J. Butcher, J. Moody, G. J. Wallace. J. Cieland. A. S. Jones, T. Segar and Major S. Walter. The chairman stated that Timaru had succeeded in obtaining the national daffodil show for 1934. All that remained to be done now was for the committee to become enthusiastic and make the show a success. Referring to the Society's visit to Christchurch to see the gardens of Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, the chairman said that all had enjoyed the trip, which had been well worth while. On the motion of Major Walter, it was agreed to write to Sir Heaton Rhodes, thanking him for allowing the Society to visit the gardens. The secretary was instructed to send letters of appreciation to Mrs R. H. Rhodes. F. Barker. Sir Heaton Rhodes, W. Balch, and O. W. B. Anderson for arranging exhibits at the show. A Small Loss. The chairman said that while the show had been a success, it had resulted in a small loss. The loss was £6/15/-, but It was estimated that nearly 1000 people had attended the show. . Mr G. Bowker said the membership stood at 327, compared with 414 in 1932. The takings at the door were £5 less than last year, and that practically accounted for the loss. Subscriptions were coming in well. There were 71 new members who were financial, and 87 old members who had not yet paid up. While the result of the show was not altogether satisfactory, the loss was small, and the Society had been unfortunate in selecting the same day as that of the Queen Carnival fete, which had accounted to a great extent for the loss. Apart from the financial side, the show was good. The special exhibits had been much admired by visitors, and, generally speaking, the Society had something to be proud of in having done so well.
After a discussion regarding the distribution of tickets, a committee consisting of Mrs Rhodes, Messrs Bowker, Knowles, Wallace and Shand, was set up to go into the matter. Messrs Knowles, Shand and F. W. Atkin were appointed judges of the cottage garden competition.
