JUBILEE BALL

ST. JOSEPH’S CONVENT, TEMUKA. The jubilee celebrations of St. Joseph's Parochial School and Convent. Temuka. were brought to a fitting conclusion on Thursday evening with a ball, at which there was an estimated attendance of 700 in the Drill Hall. Effectively decorated in green and gold on a background of hempen sheets the hall was indeed a splendid setting for the many beautiful frocks. Streamers of the colours were used to good purpose in the general scheme of decoration. and behind the orchestra a panelling of the same colours had been skilfully arranged by Mr C. F. de Joux. During the evening Bishop Brodie paid a visit to the ball, and officially met the Mayor (Mr A. W. Buzan) and Mrs Buzan, who were presented by th; Rev. Father Outtrim. S.M.. and the secretary of the Jubilee Committee (Mi G. Simes). After Father Outtrim had welcomed the gathering on behalf of the committee, the Mayor said how pleased he was to have that day met His Lordship. He trusted that they would meet again on similar happy occasions. He congratulated the jubilee committee on the success with which the functions had been arranged and said that no doubt the school and convent had played a large part in the development of the district. Fifty years was a long time, and no doubt those ex-pupils who had come back to Temuka after a long absence would notice many great changes in the general appearance of the town. Fifty years ago the land on which Temuka stood was a waste of tussock, but now Temuka was as up to date and prosperous as any town of its size in the Dominion. The convent and parish buildings were among the best in the borough. He concluded by extending the parish of St. Joseph's the best of good wishes for the future. On rising to speak Bishop Brodie was greeted w’ith applause. "My first duty,” he said, "must be to acknowledge the very’ kindly welcome that has been extended to me. Coming down through the streets on my W’ay here I noticed a display of coloured lights, signifying that a special shopping week is'being held. They show a desire to meet the return to prosperity and I trust they are prophetic. I have great faith in the ability of New Zealand to come through the depression and to bring back days of prosperity such as never were before. The depression is only temporary, and I feel that prosperity will come first and fullest to the smaller towns like Temuka. I hope this will be so and I trust that your Mayor will have a very long and successful regime. I have been at many jubilees but never, at any, has there been such attention to detail as at this. It is all due to the splendid organisation of Father Outtrim, assisted by his tireless colleague, Father Vibaud. and his willing and enthusiastic committee. lam not at all surprised at the success that has attended the functions. Especially am I pleased at the way in which the work of the Sisters of St. Joseph has been recognised. They work very hard indeed and lead most unselfish and devoted lives. Their devotion to duty is exceptional. and all the success of the last 50 years is due to them. I think the people of Temuka for the kindly sentiments they have always expressed for the sisters of clergy of the parish of St. Joseph’s.” Included in the official party, beside His Lordship and the Mayor and Mayoress, were Mrs F. Beri, Mr O. Connolly, and Mr and Mrs G. Simes. The grand march was led by Mrs Berl and Mr Connolly, who were followed by Mr and Mrs Buzan and Mr and Mrs Simes, Those present included: Mesdames Ray (Timaru), D, Fitzgerald, T. Wallace, T.
