I “It is a common belief that young j people by excessive exercise can strain j the heart, but this is not so in healthy ] individuals,” said Dr. T. W. J. JohnI son. in a lecture at the Auckland Unij versity College this week. “One may ! exhaust oneself and this exhaustion ] may continue for some hours. After a 10-miles run it has been found that ! the heart requires from six to nine hours of rest in order to recover from exhaustion and return to the normal beat. After this exhaustion has passed. however, the heart will be uninjured. A healthy heart cannot be strained by exercise, but to conserve the strength of the heart through life exercise should be regular.”
