ABDUCTION ALLEGED
CHARGE DISMISSED. BV Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, October 19. Walter Frederick Dempsey (26). labourer, was charged before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.. that on September 2 he abducted a girl aged 16 years 5 months against the wishes of her parents. The police sold Dempsey, a married man, met the girl in the botanical gardens, where he was working 12 months ago. Later they made up their minds to leave home on September 2, and went to Rangiora. Kaikoura, Blenheim and thence to the North Island, living as man and wife. The girl gave evidence that her home life was unhappy. She had had every intention of clearing out from home j whether she went with Dempsey or i not. j Th-- Magistrate said Dempsey seemed to have reasonable grounds for believing that the girl was 18 years of age. Taking all the facts into consideration he thought he was justified in dismissing the case.
