SOCIAL WELFARE

RESOLUTIONS OF AUCKLAND SYNOD. By TelegrapD—Press Association AUCKLAND, October 18. After a further protracted debate, a compromise, removing the most contentious clauses, was reached by the Anglican Synod yesterday, on the motion by the Rev. W. W. Averill, dealing with social and monetary matters. , . . . A Select Committee was appointed to recast the motion to make It acceptable to all members of the Synod. The motion subsequently carried unanimously was: (1) That this Synod calls for fearless and immediate action on the part of those in authority, with a view to relieving the intolerable conditio is under which a large section *f the community is existing. (2) That in the opinion of the Synod the destruction or curtailment of the fruits of industry, while millions remain in destitution and want, is a crime against God and humanity. (3) That the Synod considers the root cause of the present obvious maldistribution of God's gifts is a selfish lack of Divine principle of stewardship. The Synod would, therefore, emphatically record its conviction that an adequate and effective organisation of society, including its money system, must fulfil the following conditions, namely: (a) Recognition of the sacredness of each human being. (b) A practical exhibition of Divine principle of human brotherhood. (c) The moral necessity of justice to all classes of human society. (4) That this Synod would therefore urge upon the Government the need for immediate inquiry Into the following matters: (a) The inadequacy of relief pay. (b) The unfair treatment of women and youth In matters of taxation id relief. (c) The curtailment of pensions, especially of old age and widows:— <d) The lack of provision of unemployed relief to elderly men. Ineligible for either camp or pension. (e) The reappearance of "sweating" conditions since the suspension of Arbitration Awards. It was also decided to set up a Diocesan Social Council. ! j I | | j | j . j ! | | '< I j
