MORE WORK ON THE TYNE WELCOME IMPROVEMENT IN SHIPPING British Official Wireless (Received October 18, 5.5 p.m.) RUGBY, October 17. Conditions on the Tyne, where the unemployment situation was most acute, are continuing to show improvement. To date 70.000 tons more of coal have been shipped from that area than during the corresponding period last year, while the number of ships laid up is fifty-four fewer than a year ago. An upward trend In British shipbuilding, observable since the beginning of the year, continues, according to Lloyd’s quarterly returns for the three months ended September 30. The tonnage under construction at that date was 303,762, which is 65,329 above the corresponding period of the previous year. Motorships accounted for 87,294 tons of the total. The tonnage under construction abroad is 452.990, of which motorships constitute 326,801 tons, which is slightly above the last June quarter's total. Leading foreign countries are:— Tons. France 95,838 Japan 85,570 Sweden 71,440 Holland 40,862 Germany 30,300 Fifty-seven thousand tons of the above shipping being built in Britain is intended for registration abroad, or sale. Twenty-two oiltankers, of 149,064 tons, arc being built, of which the motor-driven are 131,304 tons. Sweden is the busiest in this class of building.
