RANGITATA BRIDGE
SUGGESTION BY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. .y.e Transport Committee of the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce reported to a meeting of %h e Council last night that it had given careful consideration to the proposal made by Mr J. Anstey at the last meeting of the Council in regard to a traffic bridge over the north branch . f the Rangitata river. Members of the committee made a personal inspection of the locality, and information from residents was also before the committee, which recommended:—“That representations be made to the Highways Board that upon the erection of’ the new railway bridge over the north branch of the Rangitata river, the present bridge be taken over and converted into a light traffic bridge for the purpose of providing additional access across the river, and that copies of the representations be sent to the Geraldine and Ashburton County Councils." The report stated that the committee was impressed by the fact that apart from all other phases of the question there was at present only one bridge available for vehicular traffic over the Rangitata, and it was of the opinion that the Council should direct its efforts to securing the light traffic bridge in the meantime, leaving the larger question of the conversion r i the route into a main highway for later consideration. The recommendation was approved.
