GIRL GUIDE COMPANY MEETING OF COMMITTEE A meeting of the Geraldine Gill Guide Committee was attended by the president (Miss Tripp), Mesdames A. J. Blakiston, G. A. M. Macdonald, B. Baker, L. S. King, W. A. Sherratt, O. J. D. Sharpe. Misses N. Davis, B. Steven. C Flatman, and A. T. Williams (hon. secretary), Mrs J. Hodgkins, commissioner of the Geraldine, Temuka, and Seadown Girl Guide District, and Mrs Richards, the late commissioner. A motion of sympathy was extended to Mr J. D. McKechnie and family in the death of Mrs McKechnie. who had been the treasurer of Geraldine Girl Guide Committee. Mrs L. S. King was elected to the position of treasurer, and also as examiner of the Brownies. Miss Steven reported that there were at present 13 Guides in the Geraldine Company, but that other girls would soon be coming forward. Six girls were studying for the first-class badge, and four for the second-class badge. Miss Flatman reported that there were 13 girls in the Woodbury Company, and there were also six Lone Rangers. Six Guides were competing for the first-class badge, and six had passed the examination for the childnurse badge. Miss Davis reported that a Ranger Company of 22 members had recently been formed in Geraldine. The girls were very keen, and they had also taken up country dancing and would enter a team at the Women's Institute festival, which this year would be held at Temuka. The resignation of Acting-Captain M. Ray, of the Geraldine Company, who had been obliged to relinquish her position in the Company owing to her work, was accepted with regret. The Committee agreed to meet the expenses of Miss Blackwell, a commissioner from Kaiapol, who had recently conducted Girl Guide work In the Geraldine district. WORK FOR EX-SOLDIERS. Mr J. Kennedy, chairman of the Geraldine Branch of the South Canterbury Patriotic War Relief Society, has received a further grant from Tlmaru headquarters which will make it possible to provide one day's work for registered unemployed soldiers in Geraldine Borough and County. Next week will be a “stand down" week, but the allocation will provide employment for returned soldiers for one day. FIRE BELLS TESTED. The Geraldine Volunteer Fire Brigade. under Captain C. C. Knight, have made an Inspection of the three fire bells in Talbot Street. The south end bell and the bell opposite the Fire Brigade Station were found quite satisfactory, but the bell at the north end of Talbot Street required adjustment. Captain Knight will submit a report to the Borough Council suggesting minor structural alteration to the hanging of the northern bell, which should effect an improvement, and render It clearly audible from the Fire Station. NOTES. A public meeting in connection with the Geraldine District High School Queen Carnival will be held in the Parish Hall to-night at 7.30 o'clock. Representatives of the Band, the Fire Brigade, and the sports bodies are invited. Mr E. Cholerton. proprietor of John R. Procter's, the Premier Opticians, Christchurch, win be visiting Geraldine on Wednesday, the 25th October, and may be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Crown HoteL Appointments can now be made by ringing Mr Morris WUliams (No. 61)
