TEMUKA

FARMERS’ UNION MEETS SPEEDING UP THE SALE i ’ The Temuka branch of the Farmers' Union held its monthly meeting on Tuesday afternoon. There were present—Messrs A. Bisdee (chairman), W. Buchan, S. R. Muff. A. Dobson. W. H. Staniland. H. Livesey, J. Macaulay. H. Talbot and B. Trumper. The chairman reported that he had interviewed the principal stock firm concerned in the handling of stock at the sale, with a view to speeding up the sale. Steps would be taken to meet the Union’s request. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr T. E. Gunnion was passed, and it w'as decided to forward a letter of condolence. The Provincial Executive of the Union wrote requesting the branch to consider resolutions drawing the attention‘of the Dominion Executive and local Members of Parliament to the | alleged unjust methods used by the Commissioner of Taxes in demanding returns of income from those not under an obligation to furnish returns. in allowing inaccuracies in the assessment of taxes liable to demand tax in excess of that due and in allowing unreasonable periods to elapse before calling the attention of taxpayers to inaccuracies in returns. As Mr A. J. Davey, who had introduced the question at* the executive meeting, was not present, the letter was held over. Daylight Saving. Mr T. D. Burnett. M.P.. wrote submitting drafts of amendments to the Daylight Saving Act. An extra 30 minutes, and an extension from March to April were proposed, and he requested an opinion. Mr B. Trumper said that as a dairy farmer he was opposed to daylight saving. Too much was done for sport in New Zealand. He thought that his woi\. was interfered with, and for country children going to school the hours were excessive. He moved that the branch op]>ose any extension. Mr Buchan seconded the motion. Messrs W. H. Staniland and S. R. Muff moved an amendment that daylight saving be extended over April, but that it not be increased by half an hour daily. The amendment was carried. Another amendment, to the Meat Export Control Acts, was forwarded, suggesting the fixation of killing and handling charges for meat for export. The amendment was supported. Rangitata Bridge. Mr F. Langbein. District Engineer. Public Works Department, * advised that the question of a direct main highway via the old Rangitata railway bridge had been the subject of a report he made recently to the Main Highways Board, in which he had advocated the purchase of the railway bridge. The cost would be about £IB,OOO for the conversion of the bridge and the metalling. Any further correspondence should be forwarded to the Main Highways Board. It was decided to write to the Board requesting further information. Speaking to the question. Mr W. Buchan said he thought that it would be possible to retain the present bridge and highway through Geraldine. There had been opposition from Geraldine, as it was said to be taking away the town’s life-blood. Mr A. Dobson said that the question was being discussed from opposite sides by Geraldine and Temuka Farmers’ Unions. He thought it should be settled first by the Provincial Executive. A report on the business of a recent conference of delegates of South Island dairy companies at Christchurch, to consider the proposed new scheme for pig marketing for export was considered. The film, of which the principal speaker at the conference had been a director, had exported 80.000 pigs in the North Island most successfully for farmers. It was estimated that the net return to farmers would be s*d a lb. which was greatly in excess of the present returns. Payments would be made by instalments. An organiser would visit the district in the near future to explain the scheme in full, and it was thought meetings of farmers should be held in the Clandeboye. Milford. Orari, Temuka and Waimate districts. Congratulations were extended to the four members who had secured seats on the Electoral Wheatgrowers' Committee. Messrs L. V. Talbot. A. J. Davey. F. H. Ruddenklau and J. C. Bisdee. NEW SCHOOL UNIFORM Taking the opportunity afforded by the celebration of the school's jubilee.
