BOWLING

WOMEN’S CLUBS THE SEASON OPENED The weather was beautifully fine for the official opening of the Kia Toa Women's Bowling Club yesterday. There was a full muster of members, and many representatives from other clubs were present. The president of the Club, Mrs J. T. Hunt, extended a hearty welcome to all present. She expressed the thanks the Club to Mr T. Mackie, the greenkeeper, and members who had assisted in the preparation of the green for their pleasure. The green was in excellent order, and she hoped they would all have a very enjoyable afternoon. Mr E. Darroch apologised for the absence of the president of the Centre, Mr H. Carlton, who had expressed his regret at not being able to attend. Mr Darroch said that he was pleased to see the enthusiasm that the women were showing. No doubt as the years went on they would aspire to take part in the government of the game, and some of them would be representing their clubs on the South Canterbury Bowling Centre. He wished them a very happy season and hoped that they would not arrange too many competitions, but would play more for the fun of the game. It did not improve the enjoyment in playing for cups, but the real pleasure of the game was the very many pleasant hours they spent in each other’s company. Mrs A. Foden said she brought a message of fraternity and goodwill from the Ashbury Women’s Club, and hoped they would have a successful season. Mrs Hunt then rolled up the jack and Mr Hunt sent up the first bowl of the season. Mr Darroch then declared the season open. Cheers were given for Mrs Hunt ar.d Mr Darroch. Afternoon tea was dispensed and friendly games were then played.

TIMARU. Bright, summer weather prevailed yesterday for the official opening of the Timaru Women’s Bowling Club's first season, although a strong nor’wester somewhat militated against the complete enjoyment of players and spectators. There was a large attendance of members and friends, including representatives of other clubs. The president, Mrs R. Wilson, extended a welcome to members and visitors and thanked the members of the men’s club for their co-operation in the formation of the club. Mrs Wilson welcomed the Mayoress, Mrs T. W. Satterthwaite, and expressed her pleasure at seeing Mr J. Simpson president of the men’s club present. It was to be hoped that Mr Simpson would be actively taking part on the green in the near future. The large attendance augured well for the *uccess of the newly formed club and perhaps in time a South Canterbury Women's Bowling Centre would be formed. Mrs Wilson extended congratulations to the greenkeeper on the splendid condition of the green. Mr A. R. Clark, representing the South Canterbury Centre, apologised for the absence of the president, Mr H. Carlton, and remarked that it was only a matter of time before the women's clubs would have to form a governing body to control inter-club competitions. Members of the Centre wished the club every success. Mr Clark counselled members to support their executive and to remember that

it was not the winning of games that counted by the spirit in which the games were played. A telegram was read from the Temuka Women’s Club conveying best wishes for success.

The Mayoress declared the green open and sent up the Jack, Mr R. Wilson, husband of the president rolling up the first bowl of the season for a toucher.
