RUGBY

SOUTH CANTERBURY UNION PROFIT ON THE YEAR’S OPERATIONS

General satisfaction at the success of the year’s activities was expressed at the final meeting of the management committee of the Rugby Union which was held last night. Mr J. O’Leary presided over the following members: Messrs A. B. Herdman, A. H. Clemens, W. Quirke, R. Judge, H. E. Lawson, A. G. Knowles and A. S. Aitken. The treasurer (Mr Herdman) submitted a balance-sheet, which showed a credit balance after the year’s operations.

“We can congratulate ourselves on something that has not been done before—we have come out with practically a clean sheet. We certainly borrowed £4OO, but we are going about paying it back in a business-like manner," said the chairman. The committee had curtailed expenditure and If that had been done seven or eight years ago the Union would be in a better position to-day. Credit was due to the secretary and to the treasurer, and also to the committee as a body for the success of the year’s working. Mr Clemens endorsed those remarks and said the committee could congratulate itself on the year’s working. “It has usually been a case of more kicks than half pence." “We can now sing ‘for we are jolly good fellows,’ ” remarked Mr Aitken, amid laughter. The secretary (Mr F. J. Cook) expressed his appreciation of the spirit which had existed between himself and the committee. The chairman said that the Union had nothing but praise for the secretary’s work. They had always received the utmost courtesy from Mr Cook, and it was to be hoped he would be spared to carry on next year. Mr Quirke referred to the work done by Mr Knowles, and said the committee were greatly indebted to him for his efforts in a quiet manner. In acknowledging the tribute, Mr Knowles suggested that next season the Union should try to get a team to travel south. It was a long time since a team had gone on tour, and lie thought the finance could be satisfactorily arranged. The chairman said the suggestion was a good one, and it was decided to take a note of it, for consideration at the annual meeting.
