OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP MOSS WINS TITLE By relegrapb—Press Association AUCKLAND, October IG. The tie in the New Zealand open golf championship was decided on the Titirangi links to-day, between E. J. Moss (Auckland) and E. S. Douglas (Balmacewan), and it resulted in a comfortable win for Muss by 146 strokes against 155. Both these professionals had tied over the four rounds with a total of 300. Trey started the play-off on Saturday, but a deluge of rain caused the abandonment of the game at the sixth green. Rain during the week-end and again this morning did not promise well, but apart from odd light showers the match was decided under good green conditions although the very strong southerly wind blowing made it an excellent test of accuracy. Moss was the steadier of the pair and completed the outward journey in 37, against his-opponent’s 40. A feature of the homeward journey was when Moss won the first hole in 4 to 5 and then each of the succeeding eight holes was halved. The result was that Moss finished in 37 to his opponent’s 38. Moss’s total for the round therefore was 74, whereas Douglas took 78. When seven holes of the second round had been decided Moss had doubled his lead, Douglas having found buitkers on two occasion.’' at short holes and recording fives. Features of this round were a 35 foot putt by Moss on the twenty-third green, whereas Douglas sank one from nearly 50 feet on the thirty-first. Moss completed his round in the excellent figures of 72, thereby showing wonderful consistency in recording a card for the match of 146. Douglas took 78, giving him a total of 155. Moss has now won the title three times—l 924 and 1927 being his previous successes. Douglas -was successful in 1913, 1914, 1919 and 1921. WOMEN'S TOURNAMENT YESTERDAY’S RESULTS. Challenge BowL In addition to the championship round, the L.G.U. Challenge Bowl was decided, this being over 18 holes on stroke handicap. The scores in this match, especially later in the afternoon, were adversely affected by a high wind and were, in the case of the leaders, not quite up to the standard of the Coronation Medal round last Friday. The best gross card was that of Miss O. Kay, who did the round in 79, four strokes ahead of Miss O. Smith (Napier), but the latter player’s handicap of eight gave her a net 75, which was the best of the match. Four players had 77, these being Mrs Broderick (88-11), Mrs Monteith (95-18), Mrs Monkman (92-15) and Mrs SchroS (90-13). Draw for To-day.
