STAMP SCRIP PLAN
“SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING ” REPORT TO BE BROUGHT DOWN The South Canterbury Division of the New Zealand Legion advised the Timaru Unemployment Committee at its meeting last night, that in accordance with the resolution passed at a public meeting in the Little Playhouse recently, the Unemployment Committee was requested to appoint two representatives to attend a meeting to be held on October 19 to consider and bring down a report on the stamp scrip plan and its application to Timaru as (1) relief for the unemployed and (2) stimulation of business locally. There were present—The chairman (Mr T. W. Satterthwaite), the Rev. Father Murphy, S.M., and Messrs M. Little, P. B. Foote, G. McKessar, E. G. Cliffin, R. B. Hart, J. McCort, J. G. Leckie, and S. Lang. "Personally I do not see why we should be represented on this committee,” said the chairman. Mr Foote said that those interested in the scheme in Timaru thought that they had something which was going to help, and the delegates could go along and find out what was going to happen. If they were not satisfied they could vote against the scheme. Mr Leckie: Have you any idea as to what the scheme is, Mr Chairman? The chairman: Not the remotest. I think they want to make something out of nothing. We are responsible to the Unemployment Board, and I do not think that we should be represented. Mr McCort: We are here to look after the interests of the unemployed, and I think that it is a matter of courtesy that we should be represented. The chairman said that while he could not see how anything could be made out of nothing, he hoped that the committee would be successful in its efforts. Personally, however, he doubted it very much. After several members had declined nomination, Messrs McCort and Cliffln were appointed as the committee’s delegates.
