CALIFORNIAN QUAIL A GIFT CONSIGNMENT In an endeavour to re-establish Californian quail in the district, the Waimate Acclimatisation Society recently made application for a supply of birds to the Lakes District Society, the outcome bing that a consignment of 27 birds was received last week as a gift. The qail were railed from Cromwell and reached their destination in first-class condition. The Waimate Society is keeping one pair for breeding purposes, and the remainder have been liberated in suitable localities on the properties of Messrs E. C. Studholme, "Te Waimate,” and C. C. Douglas, “Korari.” BAND OF HOPE. The Waimate Band of Hope recently conducted a poster drawing competition open to members, for prizes presented by the Mayor (Mr G. Dash). The awards were announced on Friday, when Mr Dash handed the prizes to the successful competitors as follows:—David Tooley 1. Ray Howe 2, Howard Chamberlain 3. In each subject selected by the competitors, the drawing was of a very good standard, and adjustment of the lettering to improve perspective will, in the opinion of the judges, greatly help to achieve the objective of poster design in each of the specimens submitted. FIRE BRIGADE. , A team of six men to represent the Waimate Volunteer Fire Brigade is training' assiduously with a view to competing at the Canterbury Provincial Fire Brigades’ demonstrations to be held at Hanmer Springs on Labour Day. It is probable that the team will enter for every event on the programme. ART UNION WINNER. Mr H. Dempsey. Waimate, is the winner of the first prize ill the art union conducted by the South Island Poultry Association at the Waimate Winter and Poultry Show Society’s recent show. PERSONAL. Mrs N. L. Knell who was the guest of Mrs R. A. Kit hards, Elephant Hill, has returned home Miss Joyce Burt. Christchurch, is spending a few days with Miss Garland, “Seiview,” Waimate. Mr and Mrs Morton, and Miss Kathleen Mirim ox Lceston. w.ii have been the guc-ris of Mr and Mrs runs. Armstrong, Waihaorunga have returned home. Mr W. K. Harrison, who spent the week-end with his parents, in Leonard Street, has returned to Christchurch, prior to his departure for Leeston. where he will be stationed for a few months. GOLF. At a meeting of the committee of the Golf Club it was decided to hold the official closing day next Monday, and to play a mixed foursome competition. It was also decided to hold the annual meeting at the Clubhouse after the presentation of the prizes, last year’s experiment being considered very successful. Further improvements to the links in the way of mowing and topdressing were decided upon in order to have them in the best possible order for summer play. The final of the senior championship was played during the weekend over 36 holes when T. A. Wilson beat the present holder J. C. Templer 3 up and 1 to play. There was no spectacular play on the part of either competitor, only three birdies being recorded in the whole round. Both players, however, were fairly consistent in all parts of the game. The rounds were as follows:—Wilson 40, 41, 41 and 42, Templer 41. 42. 41 and 42. This is the first occasion since Templer has played in the championship that he has lost, the new holder having won in 1930 when Templer did not play owing to illness. In the junior championship S. W. Laurenson defaulted to I. Schraeder who beat G. Aitken. The final over 36 holes will now be played by B. O’Hara and I. Schraeder. In a play off for the bogey competition A. Sawell beat J. C. Templer and will now hold the Dewar Challenge Cup. The draw for the sixth bogey round of the Ladies' Club to be played to-day is as follows:— Miss Cameron v. Mrs Chisholm: Mrs P. Grant v.
