MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING

“ HERALD” SHIELD CONTEST

RAILWAY C THE WINNERS

The competition conducted by the Timaru Miniature Rifle Association for the “Herald” Shield was concluded on Saturday night, the winning team being Railway C. Keen interest was manifested In the competition this year, no fewer than 48 teams participating. Five grades were run, and the winning team in each grade met in the final round on Saturday night. They were: Railway C, Timaru D, Railway A, Otipua and Claremont C. Both Railway C and Timaru, with their handicaps, secured the possible 400, and a shoot-off was necessary. Having put up a slightly better performance in the first shoot than Railway C, Timaru were placed on scratch, and Railway were given a handicap of two. Timaru dropped 11 points on their first shoot, and this was the margin by which they were beaten. Keen interest was also displayed in the shoot-off for the R.S.A. Cup, between J. Hull (Glen-iti) and P. Foden (Timaru), the former winning by 77 points to 75. Presentation of Trophy.

At the conclusion of the contests, the president of the Association (Mr W. Duncan) extended a welcome to all present, and said that it was pleasing to see many non-shooters taking an interest in the competitions. The "Herald” competition had developed into a very fine and very keen contest, as was evidenced by the necessity for a shoot-off. Railway C, a young club, had won the shield, and he heartily congratulated them on their success. He also congratulated the winners of the other trophies, and thanked all the clubs for the manner in which they had supported the competitions. Mr Duncan said that the shield had been presented to the Association by the “Timaru Herald” Company, and he was glad to be able to welcome the chairman of directors of the company (Mr E. G. Kerr), and the editor (Mr A. E. Lawrence). Mr Duncan expressed thanks for the liberal space which had been accorded miniature rifle shooting, and said that the publicity given had done much to stimulate shooting in the district. Before presenting the trophies, Mr Kerr expressed pleasure at being present. He said that it was 15 years since the shield had been presented to the Association, and although he had not been present at every final, he had attended a good many. He was sure all the directors of the company were pleased to see the great interest which was taken in the competition for the shield, and he congratulated Railway C on the success they had achieved. The shield was then presented by Mr Kerr to G. McLean (captain of the winning team) for the members of which cheers were given. Reciprocal cheers were given for Mr Kerr and the “Timaru Herald” Company. Several other cups and trophies were also presented. Reference was made by the president to the fine work of the handicappers. He said that they had a difficult task, but they had carried out their duties in a most efficient manner. President Congratulated. Opportunity was taken by Mr Lawrence to refer to the distinction gained by the president of the club in winning the New Zealand championship. He congratulated Mr Duncan on the great honour he had won for himself and for the club, his performance being a splendid one. The score he had put up showed what could be achieved by conscientious and consistent practice. Hearty cheers were given for Mr Duncan, who briefly returned thanks for the complimentary reference made to his success. Detailed results of the various competitions are as under:— “HERALD” SHIELD.
